    Solidarity in the summer
As has been the case for most of my adult life, I've also watched a lot of movies (and occasionally, some television) this summer. What's been different this year is that I'm now thinking more about those who made what I'm watching, both in front of and behind the camera.

Brandon Johnson’s first hundred days as Chicago mayor
“Today the dream is alive,” Mayor Brandon Johnson told a crowded room of supporters at his election night party in April, invoking the words of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in his victory speech. “Tonight is the beginning of a Chicago that truly invests in all of its people.” Johnson’s resounding victory was […]

    Teatime with Lisa Low
On the warm summer night of Lisa Low’s recent chapbook release, I trekked on foot from Pilsen to Taylor Street’s Living Water Tea House, where many poets from Chicago and beyond came together to drink tea and celebrate the release of Crown for the Girl Inside. The Chicago-based writer’s poems have appeared in Copper Nickel, […]

    Calez makes music his guide
Ten years ago, Chicago artist Calez was part of a changing of the guard in Chicago music. The south-suburban rapper made a name for himself locally during the peak of the blog era: as a member of the BRKF$T Club collective (part of a larger crew called 2008ighties), he collaborated with many future Chicago staples, […]

    Clowns over easy
The invite to a clown brunch arrived at a pivotal point in my summer, when the thought of clowning and eating made perfect sense. I accepted, and invited along a clown friend as well, so we could dine and laugh together, making hot clown summer suddenly seem feasible—thanks to the heat wave and air pollution […]

Last Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris made her way to Chicago, taking the stage at McCormick Place to address the “Everytown for Gun Safety” conference. Chicago indie rockers Ovef Ow merge reality and science fiction on the new Vs. the Worm
Local four-piece Ovef Ow have become darlings of Chicago’s indie-rock scene for their Farfisa- and guitar-driven hybrid of art-rock and punk. Their brand-new full-length debut, Vs. the Worm (released by local label What’s for Breakfast? and the band’s own Oort Clouds imprint), is a smart, topical, danceable concept album that’s more or less about the […]

The Body unleashes unpredictably predictable doom
The Body’s music is a remorseless, seemingly eternal trudge of numbing night that frequently contorts itself into a bizarre festering eclecticism, then returns to its fetid, featureless form. Formed in Providence, Rhode Island, the duo of drummer and programmer Lee Buford and guitarist and screamer Chip King (who also supplies electronic weirdness) have proved ominously […]

This Week In Black History August 23-29, 2023
    AUGUST 23
1826—This is generally recognized as the day that the first Black person in America graduated from college. His name was Edward Jones and he received his BA degree from Amherst College in Massachusetts. Despite the general recognition, however, there is some evidence that the honor actually belongs to Alexander Lucius Twilight who appears to have graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont in 1823. Nevertheless, Jones would eventually leave America and help establish the A
