  • Report: Chris Berman’s wife was intoxicated at time of crash

    HARTFORD — The wife of longtime ESPN broadcaster Chris Berman had a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit when she rear-ended another man’s car, killing them both, according to a state police report.
    The Hartford Courant reports that police determined Katherine Berman was speeding and did not apply her brakes before crashing into a car driven by 87-year-old Edward Bertulis.
    State police closed the investigation without filing any charges because both drivers died.

  • Senators Blumenthal, Markey push to limit airline baggage fees

    BOSTON — Two U.S. senators, including one from Connecticut, are calling on Congress to crack down on what they describe as exorbitant airline fees.
    Democrats Edward Markey of Massachusetts and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut have filed legislation they say would address the problem.
    They say the higher fees could come as a shock to passengers visiting family and friends over the Labor Day weekend.

    HARTFORD — The state says three beaches are closed for the start of the long Labor Day weekend.
    The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection issued a water quality report Saturday morning.
    It says Kettletown beach in Southbury and Indian Well beach in Shelton are closed due to cyanobacteria. Commonly known as blue-green algae, cyanobacteria produce toxins that can cause headaches, fever, pains and nausea. It can be fatal for fish and dogs.

    NEW HAVEN — An Illinois man has pleaded guilty in Connecticut to obtaining or trying to obtain unemployment benefits from 38 states using the stolen identities of other people.
    Federal prosecutors say 32-year-old Richard Lach, of Richton Park, Illinois, pleaded guilty Thursday to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

    MONTE VISTA, Colo. — A Colorado man pleaded guilty to poisoning bald eagles and other animals, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said Friday. The conviction followed an investigation by the agency.
    John L. Divine, 77, of Rio Grande County, pleaded guilty to 10 misdemeanors of illegal take of wildlife and using poisons to kill wildlife, according to CPW. Divine paid more than $8,000 in fines in April.
