    HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) _ A Connecticut museum dedicated to Irish history is launching an exhibition focusing on the time Frederick Douglass spent in the country in the 1840s.
    The exhibition at Ireland’s Great Hunger Institute at Quinnipiac University explores the impact that the poverty-ridden country had on the development of the anti-slavery campaigner.
    Douglass was in his 20s when he visited Ireland on a lecture tour and met one of his heroes, the Irish abolitionist Daniel O’Connell.

    NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.  — Police say former NBA star Dennis Rodman has been arrested on suspicion of DUI in Southern California.
    Lt. Rachel Johnson of the Newport Beach Police Department says Rodman was pulled over late Saturday for a traffic violation.
    Johnson says officers administered a field sobriety test, which Rodman failed. She says he submitted to a Breathalyzer test and blew over the .08 legal limit.

    HARTFORD  — Bird enthusiasts have traversed eastern Connecticut looking for eagles.The Norwich Bulletin reports the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection counts eagles across the state annually. A nonprofit, The Last Green Valley, is responsible for counting in the northeast region of the state.

    Police responded to calls of a crash at the intersection of Baker Street Meloy Road around 2:13 a.m.

  • Officials Report A Steep Increase In Flu Hospitalizations

    HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut public health officials say they have seen a steep increase in the number of people hospitalized with influenza over the past five weeks.
    The Department of Public Health says this year’s flu virus has been particularly severe among people 65 years old or older. They’ve accounted for 70 percent of patients who’ve been hospitalized.

     MONTECITO, CA — At least 20 people have died as a result of the mudslides that devastated Montecito, California, according to the California Department of Fire and Forestry Protection. Four people are still missing.

    HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut Education Commissioner Dianna Wentzell says her agency was unable to follow through with a 2015 state law authorizing a new digitized form that public schools can use to outline special education services.

    PERU — Two people were killed when a 7.1-magnitude earthquake shook Peru on Sunday, according to a regional governor.
    One of the two victims was a 55-year-old man crushed by a rock in Yauca, tweeted Yamila Osorio, governor of the Arequipa region in southern Peru. The other victim died in the same region, Hernando Tavera, president of the Geophysics Institute of Peru, told TV Peru, without providing further details.
