    HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is using his executive powers to change the structure of Connecticut’s only maximum-security hospital following allegations of abuse by staff members.
    The Democrat announced Tuesday he signed an order separating the Whiting Forensic Division from Connecticut Valley Hospital — a state-run psychiatric hospital in Middletown. That means there will now be a distinct entity known as Whiting Forensic Hospital.

    The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s annual inauguration ceremony on Tuesday marked the start of the first terms for Matthew Pearson and Latoya Cluff.

    (CBS Connecticut) — Hartford Police today identified a 22-year-old man killed in a crash at Trinity College.
    Hector Rios-Acevedo of Hartford died when the Toyota Matrix he was driving hit a heavy brick column at the campus.
    Part of the column toppled over.
    First responders were called to Summit Street and New Britain Avenue about 3 am on New Year’s Day.
    Two passengers, 21-year-old Natasha Cruz and a 12-year-old whose name was not released were taken to the hospital after the crash.

    HARTFORD — Police are investigating after a dog left out in the cold was found dead Monday.
    Police said a concerned citizen reported a dog that was left out in the cold at 108 Adams St. Officers found the dog frozen in the back yard.
    Officials said there were no protective measures provided for the animal. Police said the occupant was cooperating and they expect to file animal cruelty charges against the officer.

  • Three arrested after attempted break-in at Richard Childress’ home

    DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — Three men have been arrested for trying to break into Richard Childress’ home in mid-December, according to a press release.
    According to WGHP, Childress, owner of Richard Childress Racing, heard a crash at a door on the lower level of his Davidson County home at about 10:45 p.m. on Dec. 17.
    Childress armed himself with a handgun and went to investigate. He fired shots at the armed suspects, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office said.

    BROCKPORT, N.Y. - A close encounter between a police officer and squirrel was caught on camera inside a home in upstate New York.
    Officers were called to the home northwest of Rochester on December 29th for reports of a squirrel in the kitchen, eating cookies.

    MIDDLETOWN — Connecticut State Police responded to nearly 500 accidents, two of them fatal, over the New Year’s holiday.
    Police on Tuesday announced that they responded to 494 accidents during the four-day enforcement period that started at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and ended at 11:59 p.m. Monday.

    (CBS Connecticut) — A fire in an apartment complex on the Simsbury-Avon town line has forced the shut down of a heavily traveled street nearby.
    Simsbury Police said Route 10 is closed between Old Meadow Plain Road and Lincoln Lane.
    The fire is in the Meadow Apartments.
    The complex includes several buildings. Only one building was affected.
    There was no immediate indication of any injuries.
    Firefighters and police are on the scene right now.
