    EAST HARTFORD —  Police are investigating after they said a man was found shot inside a car Friday afternoon.
    East Hartford police said they received calls for shots fired at Holmes and Mill Street around 1:15. Police said when they arrived to a parking area, they found a man shot in a car.
    Police said the victim was taken to an area hospital but his extent of his injuries are unknown at this time. No other details have been released at this time.

  • Government shutdown averted as funding deadline moved to January 19

    WASHINGTON DC — The Senate approved a short-term spending measure Thursday night to keep the government open through January 19, avoiding a government shutdown ahead of a Friday deadline.
    Along with funding the government for nearly a month, the bill extends funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program through March and includes a three-week extension of a government surveillance program.

    BRISTOL — The Bristol Police Department said one of its officers shot and wounded a dog that bit him and appeared ready to attack him again.
    Bristol police said two officers were serving an arrest warrant Thursday when a dog ran out and bit one of the officers on the arm. The officer got his arm free, but believed the dog was preparing to bite again. He pulled his gun and shot the dog once. It ran away and was later transported to a veterinarian for treatment.

  • Doctor faces charges over opioid prescriptions and 5 patient deaths

    PHILADELPHIA  — A Pennsylvania doctor was indicted Thursday on 19 counts, including charges regarding the deaths of five patients he had prescribed opioids to, according to the Department of Justice. It alleges that Dr. Raymond Kraynak caused their deaths between 2013 and 2015 by “unlawfully distributing and dispensing controlled substances to them.”
    Prosecutors also say Kraynak prescribed nearly 3 million doses of opioids from January 2016 through July 2017.

    SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Dick Enberg, the sportscaster who got his big break with UCLA basketball and went on to call Super Bowls, Olympics, Final Fours and Angels and Padres baseball games, died Thursday. He was 82.
    Engberg’s daughter, Nicole, confirmed the death to The Associated Press. She said the family became concerned when he didn’t arrive on his flight to Boston on Thursday, and that he was found dead at his home in La Jolla, a San Diego neighborhood, with his bags packed.
