    NEWTOWN — Nearly half of Connecticut’s school districts are violating state safety requirements enacted in the wake of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

    WASHINGTON  — The House has passed a bill to prevent a government shutdown this weekend.
    The measure passed on a 235-193 vote Thursday, mostly along party lines, and would keep the government running through Dec. 22. The idea is to buy time for negotiations on unfinished bipartisan business on Capitol Hill, including the budget, a key children’s health program and aid to hurricane-slammed Puerto Rico.

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CBS Connecticut and AP) – Fourteen states and the District of Columbia are suing the Trump administration over what they say is a failure to enforce smog standards.

    STAMFORD  — Police have charged a Connecticut man with stealing more than $34,000 from the restaurant where he worked.
    Officials say 45-year-old George Spiro Moschos, of Stamford, is charged with larceny and 53 counts of forgery. The Stamford Advocate reports that he is being held in lieu $50,000 bail.

  • Firefighters Extinguish Trash Fire In Garbage Truck

    FAIRFIELD, Conn. (CBS Connecticut and AP) – Firefighters in Fairfield say they’ve put out a potentially hazardous trash fire on a garbage truck.
    The Fairfield Fire Department said the truck fire happened at about 6 a.m. on Thursday.
    Emergency responders instructed the garbage truck driver to dump the flaming refuse into the road to prevent it from extending to the vehicle.
    The department says it required a number of firefighters with heavy equipment to bring the blaze under control.

    WEST JORDAN, Utah -- “I was not dressed. I was in my underwear, I had no shoes on, and my feet ended up getting bloodied just from chasing him down the street."
