• DMV To Convene Hearing On Towing Rates

    HARTFORD, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) – Connecticut tow truck operators are asking the Department of Motor Vehicles to increase the rates they can charge for various non-consensual towing services.
    The rates apply to services such as police-ordered removal of vehicles from a highway and towing related to illegal parking. They do not apply to towing services provided by automobile clubs.

  • Police ID Victim In Meriden Thanksgiving Fire

    MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) – Meriden police have identified a 69-year-old man killed in a house fire on Thanksgiving.
    The Record-Journal reports Sgt. Darrin McKay said Tuesday that Michael Avery died in the Nov. 23 blaze.
    Records show Avery was a co-owner of the home.
    Fire investigators say the cause of the early morning fire will not be determined due to the damage and a lack of witnesses.

    WATERBURY — It started as a serious crash in Waterbury, but now it’s a murder investigation.
    Police say a 16-year-old girl dead in a car that had crashed on Thomaston Avenue in Waterbury. She had a gunshot wound.The car ended up in the yard of a home near Sheffield Street.
    The incident happened Monday evening.
    Police will not say if the girl died from the crash or from the gunshot.
    The girl was found dead on arrival.
    The power was knocked out to around 100 homes at the time.

    The crash occurred around 10 o’clock at the 1700 Block of Thomaston Avenue. Police say they found the girl, who had been shot, inside the car. She was pronounced dead on scene. It is unknown if the crash or shooting caused her death.
    A suspect is in custody, as police continue to investigate.
