• Red Sox Hire Alex Cora As New Manager

    BOSTON (AP) _ The Boston Red Sox have hired Houston Astros bench coach Alex Cora to be their new manager.
    The team made the announcement on Sunday, a day after Cora’s Astros reached the World Series.
    Cora replaces John Farrell, who was fired this month despite winning back-to-back AL East titles. Farrell’s teams won the 2013 World Series, finished last twice and then in each of the past two years won the division but got eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

    BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) _ The trial over Vernon resident Jeanette Bifolck’s death in 2000 is scheduled to begin Monday in federal court in Bridgeport. Bifolck’s husband, Vincent Bifolck, filed a wrongful death lawsuit in 2006 against Philip Morris, a subsidiary of Richmond, Virginia-based Altria Group Inc.
    Jeanette Bifolck died after having smoked Marlboro and Marlboro Lights since the early 1970s. She was 42 years old.

    NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ Federal prosecutors are seeking more than a year inprison for a Norwich man convicted in an insurance scam involving staged carcrashes in eastern Connecticut.

    MANSFIELD, Conn. (AP) _ Officials say several people suffered injuries when an explosion occurred in a restaurant kitchen just before a fundraiser.
    The Hartford Courant reports the explosion happened just after 5 p.m. Saturday at the Spring Hill Inn, where a wine-tasting was being held. At least five people are believed to have been injured. State police spokeswoman Kelly Grant says their injuries appear to be non-life-threatening.
