    BOSTON (AP) _ John Farrell racked up a lot of wins and World Series title with the Boston Red Sox. But past success wasn’t enough to save his job after consecutive early playoff exits.
    Boston fired Farrell on Wednesday after the team’s second straight loss in the AL Division Series.
    The Red Sox announced the move less than 48 hours after they were eliminated from the World Series hunt with a 5-4 loss to the Houston Astros .

    EAST GRANBY, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) – A Connecticut National Guard C-130 cargo plane made an emergency landing at Bradley Air National Guard Base Wednesday afternoon.
    The plane had taken off five minutes earlier and experienced a small amount of smoke in the cockpit, forcing the aircraft to turn around, according to a National Guard spokesman.
    The plane, with its crew of five, landed without incident. The source of the smoke is under investigation.

    MANCHESTER, Conn. (CBS Connecticut and AP) – Police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy in Manchester.
    Authorities say the child was brought to Manchester Memorial Hospital hospital around 9 a.m. Monday with unspecified injuries. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
    An autopsy is scheduled to determine the boy’s cause of death, but officers are calling it suspicious.
    No arrests have been made, and an investigation is ongoing.

    The Ivy League university in a statement Tuesday said the endowment earned an 11.3 percent investment return for the fiscal year that ended June 30.
