  • A new future for the former St. Columban Center

    DERBY, N.Y. (WIVB) – A historic building on one of Western New York’s most prominent waterfronts, has new owners.
    The St. Columban Center, a 20th century mansion in Derby, will now be turned into a wedding venue and resort.
    The Diocese of Buffalo officially closed on the property as of Wednesday — for one $1.4 million dollars.
    These new partners will be the first commercial owners the historic home has seen in its more than 70 years of operation.

  • Williamsville man admits to leaving the scene of deadly crash

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Williamsville man admitted to leaving the scene of a deadly crash near the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport in Cheektowaga.
    Lawrence Penna, 68, pleaded guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an incident resulting in death before Erie County Court Judge Kenneth Case.
    Penna was driving to the airport to pick up a family member on June 7 when his vehicle collided with a pickup truck carrying four women from Minnesota.The crash caused the truck to flip over,
  • Florida woman charged with DUI while riding horse

    LAKELAND, Fla. — A 53-year-old woman riding a horse down a busy Florida highway has been arrested and charged with driving drunk.
    Polk County Sheriff’s officials said in a news release that someone called 911 about a woman who appeared confused and possibly in danger. When deputies arrived they found Donna Byrne riding her horse in the road.

  • Jamestown man charged with strangulation

    JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Jamestown man has been charged with choking a female victim to the point of unconsciousness.
    Todd Bower, 28, of Jamestown, was charged Tuesday with second degree strangulation and second degree harassment.
    According to NYSP, an investigation revealed that Bower became upset with the victim and choked her. After she regained consciousness, Bower pushed her and struck her in the head.
    Bower was remanded to Chautauqua County Jail.
     
     
     
     
  • Buffalo woman pleads guilty to collecting over $50,000 in benefits while employed

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Buffalo woman has pleaded guilty to collecting over $50,000 in food stamps and Medicaid benefits while working as a caregiver for an elderly West Seneca woman.
    Suzanne Smith, 50, of Buffalo, pleaded guilty to third degree welfare fraud.
    Smith admitted to lying on her Dept. of Social Services application and re-certification applications, stating specifically that she had no income while she was being paid to be the caregiver of a 105-year-old woman.

  • Hamburg police receive report of small object in Halloween candy

    HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) — Police in the Town of Hamburg say they are “investigating an incident of tampering” involving Halloween candy.
    Police received a report of “a sewing type needle or small nail type object” in a piece of banana-flavored Laffy Taffy.
    Authorities think the candy was given out in the Pine Lakes area of Lake View.
    Police are asking parents to check any candy kids may have received from that area.

  • Darien Lake planning to add new roller coaster

    DARIEN, N.Y. (WIVB) — Darien Lake is planning to add a new roller coaster at the Genesee County theme park.
    In an email to the Darien Town Clerk, Darien Lake General Manager Chris Thorpe said there are plans to demolish the Thunder Rapids log flume.
    The new ride has not been officially approved yet, but the Director of the Genesee County Planning Board sees no issues ahead for its approval.
    A name for the planned roller coaster has not been revealed.

    TOWN OF PIKE, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Wyoming County man has been charged with Menacing, Criminal Mischief and Illegal Discharge of a Firearm.

    (CBS) – Starbucks is reporting disappointing sales growth at its coffee shops around the world and says it will sell its Tazo tea brand to Unilever for $384 million.
    Shares of Starbucks Corp.(SBUX)  fell 6 percent in after-hours trading Thursday.
    Starbucks, which bought Tazo about 18 years ago for $8.1 million, says it will now focus on its Teavana line. It says the tea category in Starbucks stores is growing, though earlier this year had announced plans to shut Teavana stores.
