  • Attempted escape reported at N.C. prison; several employees injured

    ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — An attempted escape was reported Thursday afternoon at a northeastern North Carolina state prison.
    The North Carolina Department of Public Safety tweeted that the attempted escape happened at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City around 3:30 p.m..     TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Lane closures are scheduled for NY Route 425 (Colvin Boulevard) starting next week.
    The lane closures will begin Monday at about 9 a.m. Motorists can expect to encounter a left lane closure on Colvin Boulevard northbound near I-290.
    Additional nightly lane closures are scheduled that will reduce Colvin Boulevard northbound to one lane starting at 7 p.m. and ending at 6 a.m.

  • Boy found shot dead after 3 adults slain in Ohio

    (AP) – A 7-year-old boy missing after three people were killed in a shooting has been found dead as a manhunt for the killer continues in southern Ohio.
    Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless says Devin Holston was shot and his body apparently hidden in the home where three adults were found dead Wednesday evening.
    The suspect, 23-year-old Aaron Lawson, is being sought on warrants for charges including aggravated murder.

  • Man accused in home improvement scam

    ARCADE, N.Y. (WIVB)  – A Rushford man has been accused of scamming an elderly Arcade resident by charging $12,000 to power wash a house, cut some tree limbs, and clean gutters.
    James R. Stuart, 58, of Rushford, was charged Wednesday with third degree grand larceny and scheme to defraud following an investigation by Wyoming County Sheriff’s deputies into the fraud.

    (CBS) – Ophelia became a hurricane on Wednesday, becoming the 10th hurricane in the Atlantic in 2017. Way out in the middle of the Atlantic, it’s unlikely it will be a threat to U.S., although it could possibly be a threat to Ireland, the National Hurricane Center said.
    As of 5:00 a.m. ET, the storm has maximum sustained winds of near 85 mph, and some strengthening could happen over the next 48 hours. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

    NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say a Long Island man convicted of murder in the brutal stabbing of a 21-year-old woman has died in an upstate New York prison.
    An official with the state Department of Corrections and Community Service told Newsday that Dante Taylor was pronounced dead on Saturday at a hospital in Erie County. A medical examiner is to determine the cause of death.

    CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Security changes are coming to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

    BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say two Florida women overdosed on heroin in a sports utility vehicle with two infants in the back seat.
    Boynton Beach police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said in a news release that 28-year-old Kristen Leigh O’Connor and 29-year-old June Schweinhart were taken to a hospital Thursday after officers found them inside the SUV.     DUNKIRK, N.Y. (WIVB) — Early Thursday morning, suspicious activity in Dunkirk led to a Fredonia man’s arrest on drug charges.

    CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Flames overtook a home on Aris Ave. in Cheektowaga overnight.
    Firefighters say the fire started around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday.

    DENVER, CO (CBS) — Two women have been charged with killing two young girls whose bodies were found on a Colorado farm.
