    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — On Thursday afternoon, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz announced that seven Erie County residents died in 24 hours due to a deadly batch of heroin.
    Poloncarz and other county officials said there was a spike in opioid overdose deaths early in the year. One person died as a result of opioids every day for the first 19 days of 2017.

    JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (WIVB) — Jamestown Police are looking for a suspect in 11 separate fires being investigated as arson.
    Police say the fires occurred from early this year to Saturday morning. Late Friday night and Saturday morning, five occurred.
    The fires have involved condemned and vacant buildings. Police believe one person is responsible for most of the fires, but that there could have been other people involved.

    MIDDLEPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) — The DEC will continue efforts to remove contaminated soil from locations near the FMC plant in Middleport this May.
    34 properties in the Niagara County village, which the DEC says were contaminated by FMC Corporation operations, are being sought after by the DEC for cleanup. They are in the areas of Alfred St., Freeman Ave. and S. Vernon St.

    Niagara County pushes for new county-wide ambulance service
    NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVB)- Officials in Niagara County want Mercy EMS to provide county-wide ambulance services.
    The non-profit would replace Twin City and American Medical Response, which are currently providing services to the county.
    The conflict started in the summer of 2016, when American Medical Response pulled out of the majority of Niagara County.

    Hochul tells residents to call legislators in push for ride sharing
    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — At an event in Buffalo Wednesday, Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul called on New York state residents, especially in Buffalo, to call you local legislators to push for ride sharing.
    Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said an agreement on ride sharing was within reach, calling it “likely.”
    The governor is looking to change the state insurance law, which would allow Uber to have a blanket policy for drivers’ personal cars while they’re being used for ride hailing.

    CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A man has pleaded guilty to charges related to a crash that paralyzed another driver.
    Kevin Reyome, 55, of Buffalo, was driving his pickup truck after midnight on Sept. 16 when he rear-ended a vehicle being driven by 37-year-old Buffalo resident John Reinard.
    Reinard was stopped at a red light on Harlem Rd. in Cheektowaga at the time.
