    EAST AURORA, N.Y. (WIVB) — In his nearly four decades in law enforcement, Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard knows what it’s like to battle.
    But few have been as trying as what he and his wife Sue were up against in 2016. The hits came in succession.
    “My mom died Jan. 30. She was diagnosed with brain cancer,” Sue Howard said. “The day that we found out, was three weeks that she went. And then five months later, that’s when I found out I had breast cancer.

    ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) – The Bills announced Thursday afternoon their plans to begin the 2017-2018 offseason and preseason training. The schedule begins on Monday April 3rd with the beginning of the program and concludes with mandatory mini-camp on Thursday June 15th.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The NHL has taken disciplinary action against Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen for his blindside hit that led to Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel suffering a concussion.
    The league’s Department of Player Safety held a hearing with Buffalo’s top defenseman on Thursday, leading to him being suspended for three games.

    Body discovered at vacant house following Friday fire
    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Buffalo police say a body was found at a vacant house on Hirschbeck St.
    The body was discovered around 1:30 p.m. Thursday as crews were conducting a demolition following a Friday fire.

    FREDONIA, N.Y. (WIVB) — A pedestrian was struck by a semi-truck in Fredonia Thursday morning.
    Fredonia police say Bobby Brown, 76, was hit on E. Main St. while the truck was turning onto the street. According to them, the driver just finished making a delivery at the Basil vehicle dealership when it tried to turn out onto the street.

    CLARENCE, N.Y. (WIVB) — Shortly after Midnight Thursday, the Erie County Sheriff’s office says a passenger with multiple warrants tried to escape during a traffic stop.
    A deputy stopped a vehicle on Main St. in Clarence and began to investigate the driver and passenger. Authorities say the passenger, Thomas Szklarz, 37, got out of the vehicle and ran east as other deputies arrived.

    Niagara County man in critical condition after ATV crash
    HARTLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) — On Wednesday night, the Niagara County Sheriff’s office says a man was hospitalized in an ATV accident.
    The Sheriff’s office says Hartland resident Douglas Baldwin, 69, was driving an ATV on Rose Rd. in the town when he struck a trailer. The trailer was attached to an SUV that was parked on the side of the road.
    According to authorities, the ATV rolled several times, and Baldwin was ejected.

    NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Seneca Nation says their next payment to the state for casino operations will be their last. The Seneca Nation has paid the state more then $1.4 billion since 2002.
