    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Back in August, Erie County launched an entire task force to help curb the growing opioid epidemic.
    Hundreds of people were dying of overdoses, and organizers brought together leaders from every community to pitch in and help.

    Chautauqua County man accused of assaulting child
    ELLINGTON, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Chautauqua County man has been accused of assaulting a child.
    The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office says James Haley, 38, assaulted a male child sometime between Saturday and Tuesday.
    Haley was arrested at his home and arraigned in Town of Charlotte Court. He faces charges of assault, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation and endangering the welfare of a minor.
    Haley was jailed in Chautauqua County on $10,000 bail.

    TOWN OF HOLLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) — Erie County Sheriff’s deputies say they had to chase someone down after a traffic stop in the Town of Holland.
    A deputy pursued Buffalo resident Jamie Wilson, 47, after pulling him over around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday.
    Authorities say Wilson fled into the woods, but he was eventually captured. During the chase, Wilson was allegedly seen throwing things.

    WASHINGTON (AP) — In his last major act as president, Barack Obama is cutting short the sentences of 330 federal inmates convicted of drug crimes.
    The move brings Obama’s bid to correct what he’s called a systematic injustice to a climactic close.
    Obama has now commuted the sentences of 1,715 people, more than any other president in U.S. history. During his presidency Obama freed 568 inmates serving life sentences.

    Man pleads guilty to strangling estranged girlfriend
    BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A man brought his murder trial to a halt when he pleaded guilty to beating and strangling his estranged girlfriend.
    Twenty-five-year-old Raymond Smith, of Buffalo, faces 25 years to life in prison after entering the plea in Erie County Court on Wednesday.
    Smith was on trial in the 2015 death of 21-year-old Shaquilla Coston, the mother of his son. Prosecutors say he pleaded guilty during a break to the highest count he faced.
    Sentencing is scheduled for March 9.

    Man sentenced for role in boat accident that killed Lockport teen
    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The man who owned a boat involved in a fatal accident was sentenced to 2-4 years in prison.
    Early in the morning in June of 2015, Timothy Wisniewski, 51, was on a boat in Ellicott Creek with Gregory Green and Avery Gardner. Green was 17 at the time and Gardner had just turned 16.
    Green was high and drunk while driving Wisniewski’s boat. At one point, the three were passing under a bridge, and Gardner fatally hit her head.
