    Milder winter is good news for WNY snow removal operations
    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – As we all know Buffalo winters can be challenging.
    But this year you could say taxpayer-funded snow removal operations caught a break.
    “Mother nature was very good,” said Steve Stepniak, Buffalo DPW Commissioner.
    And that’s good news for local governments tasked with plowing, sanding and salting the roads.
    Thanks to a milder winter, highway departments were able to save some money on battling the snow and cold.

    WASHINGTON, D.C. (WIVB) — Police in Washington D.C. reported shots fired in the U.S. Capitol Building’s visitor center, prompting an immediate lockdown of the area just before 3 p.m. on Monday.
    Officers reported the shooter was taken down and arrested, but a lockdown persisted until just before 4 p.m. The Associated Press reported the gunman fired off shots, injuring a Capitol police officer, although the injuries aren’t serious.

    WASHINGTON (AP) — Police shot a man on Monday after he pulled a weapon at a U.S. Capitol checkpoint as spring tourists thronged Washington, authorities said.     BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — In the first few months of 2016, there have been more firearms seized than in the entire year of 2015, with officers confiscating yet another on Monday.
    Officials say officers stopped to investigate further a laptop bag, only to find a loaded nine millimeter gun with six bullets inside. It’s not yet known if the man will face charges, but attempting to bring a gun in a carry-on is illegal and punishable by charges and fines of up to $11,000.

    Man arrested, extradited back to WNY for allegedly raping 13-year-old
    AMITY, N.Y. (WIVB) — A man who formerly lived in western New York will head back to the region in handcuffs after he was arrested on charges of rape.
    Authorities say they arrested on Sunday 27-year-old Michael Turner, months after beginning an investigation into his alleged conduct with a 13-year-old girl.
    Turner faces charges of second-degree rape, second-degree sex abuse and acting in a manner to injure a child less than 17-years-old — a felony and two misdemeanors.

    Unknown substance found in letter to Sen. Gallivan
    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — An envelope addressed to Sen. Patrick Gallivan was found to have a non-specific threat and an unknown substance inside when it was opened Monday morning.
    The letter was opened by Gallivan’s Albany office manager. Gallivan was not in the office at the time.

    Mother Angelica passes away on Easter Sunday
    HANCEVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) — Mother Mary Angelica, foundress of the EWTN Global Catholic Network, passed away Easter Sunday at age 92.
    Mother Angelica died peacefully at 5 p.m., surrounded by the Poor Clare Nuns of Perpetual Adoration of Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Hanceville, Alabama.
    EWTN Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael P. Warsaw released the following statement after her passing:

    ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a volcano on Alaska’s Aleutian Islands erupted Sunday afternoon and sent ash 20,000 feet into the air.
    The agency says the Pavlof Volcano, which is about 600 miles southwest of Anchorage, erupted at 4:18 p.m. local time. The agency says the eruption also led to tremors on the ground.

    BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Dozens of firetrucks and responders converged on a recycling facility on Metcalfe and Clinton Streets for a large rubbish fire around 8pm Sunday night.
