  • Baltimore’s Plastic Bag Ban One Step Closer To Becoming Law

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Baltimore’s effort to ban plastic bags is one step closer to becoming law after a city council vote Monday.
    Councilmembers voted 13-1 to move the legislation banning plastic bags at stores and restaurants around the city forward.
    Under the current proposal, shoppers would be charged five cents for other types of bags, including paper.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A vacant building collapse caused thousands of dollars in damage to a home in west Baltimore.
    It happened Halloween when strong storms came through late in the night. The winds blew part of a vacant house on the home next door.
    Johnny Gibbs and his wife Irene are two of the last residents on their block. She called the city about a partial roof collapse of the house next door back in August.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Maryland Lottery and Gaming announced Tuesday that October 2019 gaming revenues for the state’s six casinos were $143,895,409, an 8.9 percent decrease compared to this time last year.
    Contributions to the State of Maryland from October 2019 casino gaming revenue totaled $59,267,140, including $44,456,366 for the Education Trust Fund.
    Three of Maryland’s six casinos saw year-over-year increases compared to their October 2018 gaming revenue totals.

    BALTIMORE (AP) — A federal appeals court has upheld the robbery, racketeering and conspiracy convictions of two Baltimore detectives who were members of a corrupt police unit.

    WESTMINSTER, Md. (WJZ) — A kitten found on Bachman Valley Road near Eckard Road in Carroll County tested positive for the rabies virus, according to health officials.
    The kitten was a gray, short-haired tiger cat. It was found late at night Oct. 29, and taken to the Humane Society the following morning.
    The kitten was ill and lethargic so it did not bite anyone. However, the person who found and handled the kitten was exposed to its saliva, so will receive post-exposure treatment.

  • Child Sex Abuse Cases Treated In ERs Rose More Than 70 Percent In 7 Years, Study Says

    (CNN) — The number of US adolescents admitted to emergency rooms for injuries related to sexual abuse more than doubled between 2010 and 2016, according to a new study. For kids ages 12 to 17, the number increased from 2,280 in 2010 to 5,058 in 2016.
    The study, published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics, found that the number of emergency department admissions for child sexual abuse jumped from 5,138 in 2010 to 8,818 in 2016, an increase of more than 70%.

     (CNN) — Dutch Olympian Madiea Ghafoor has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in jail after being found with more than 110 pounds of drugs in her car.
    The 27-year-old had about 110 pounds of ecstasy and about 2.5 pounds of methamphetamine in her possession when she was stopped at a routine border check in Germany in June.
