• CDC Confirms 16 More Cases Of AFM, Rare Polio-Like Illness

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The CDC has confirmed 16 more cases of a rare, polio-like illness that mostly affects children.
    This means there are now 106 confirmed cases of acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, in 29 states- including Maryland.
    The CDC is still investigating another 167 possible cases of the illness.
    AFM is rare and the cause is still unknown, there is no cure and no vaccine.
    Experts recommend staying on top of other vaccinations, protecting against mosquito bites and washing hands often.
  • UMD Student Dies Of Adenovirus-Related Illness

    COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WJZ) — A University of Maryland student has died from an adenovirus-related illness.
    Adenovirus has been in the news in recent weeks after several children died from the disease at a rehab facility in New Jersey.
    The University of Maryland’s Health Center said it learned of the student’s illness on November 1.
    Since then, there have been reports of five additional cases of students with an adenovirus-associated illness.

    SALISBURY, Md. (WJZ) — Maryland State Police is warning of a phone scam in which a caller is spoofing the phone number for the Maryland State Police Salisbury Barrack.
    At least five people have reported the call to police. They said the call appeared to come from the Salisbury Barrack, and when they answered, they said a man with “a heavy accent” said they needed to give him their name, date of birth, and social security number for a case they were involved in.
