• Ravens Player Featured At Best Buddies Fundraiser

    COCKEYSVILLE, Md. (WJZ) — A Ravens player was featured at a Best Buddies event in Cockeysville on Friday night.
    Ravens defensive lineman Brandon Williams was featured at the event, “Taste Buds”.
    The event was a fundraiser for Best Buddies Maryland, a non-profit that supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
    Chefs from 20 area restaurants were there with their best dishes.
    Last year, the event raised $103,000.

  • Gazette Reporter Remembered During Veterans Classic

    ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) — One of the victims of the Capital Gazette shooting was remembered during this year’s Veteran’s Day classic.
    A moment of silence was held Friday night during the Navy-Maryland college basketball game in Annapolis.
    Reporter John McNamara was one of the journalists killed back in June when a gunman opened fire inside the Capital Gazette newsroom.
    The Naval Academy paid tribute by leaving a vacant seat open for him.

  • Oystermen Fear Rain Is Hurting Maryland Harvest

    BALTIMORE (AP) — Representatives of Maryland’s oyster industry say they fear that heavier rains could hurt this year’s harvest.
    The Baltimore Sun reports that the rain makes water in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries less salty. Salt is essential to make oysters thrive.
    Jim Mullin is president of the Maryland Oystermen’s Association. He says that he has concerns about how the rain is going to affect the oyster population.

  • Officer Suspended Over Claims Of Soliciting Drivers’ Money

    PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (AP) — A Maryland police officer has been suspended over allegations the officer demanded money to let motorists avoid tickets during traffic stops.
    Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski announced the suspension Saturday.
    The first driver told the department Friday that the officer asked for cash to avoid giving the motorist a citation during a traffic stop.

    ABERDEEN, Md. (WJZ) — Aberdeen Police are looking for a woman who was last seen in Aberdeen a few days ago.
    23-year-old Elsie Lugo-Cruz is described as 5’1″ tall with a thin build. She has a tattoo on her left collarbone.

  • Man Dies In North Baltimore Shooting

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A man has died from a gunshot to the head Saturday afternoon.
    Officers responded to the 4600 block of York Road at around 2:50 p.m. for the report of a shooting.
    When they arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
    The victim was taken to an area hospital where he later died.

    PASADENA, MD. (WJZ) — Friday night, members of Anne Arundel County held a town hall to address what they say has been a spike in racism in their community.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — For those struggling to lose those few extra pounds, some daily weigh-ins may actually help.
    Research from the University of Pittsburgh shows people who weigh themselves daily are more likely to lose weight compared to those who don’t weigh themselves at all or weigh themselves rarely.
    However, experts say some people should not weigh themselves every day if they tend to obsess about the scale, because it could increase the risk of an eating disorder.

  • Sears, Kmart Closing More Stores In February

    BETHESDA, Md. (WJZ) — The problems continue to mount for troubled retailers Sears and K-Mart.
    Sears Holdings announced Thursday that 11 K-Marts and 29 Sears locations will shut their doors in February.
    The latest list does not include any K-Mart locations in Maryland, but the Sears in Bethesda will close.
    The closings come in addition to the nearly 200 locations the company said it would shut down in the coming months.

    NEW YORK (WJZ) — It looks like El Chapo won’t be getting his hug.
    A federal court judge in New York has denied the drug kingpin’s request to hug his wife before opening statements in his drug trafficking trial.
    That trial is set to begin next week.
    Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been held in solitary confinement in a high-security prison for nearly two years. He has had no contact with his wife.
    If convicted, Guzman could spend the rest of his life in prison.

    Ryan announced the pair’s engagement on Thursday via Instagram.

  • AACO Man Pleads Guilty To Sexually Abusing Minor, Producing Child Pornography

    BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ) — A Glen Burnie man pleaded guilty on Friday to producing child pornography in connection with his sexual abuse of a young boy.
    According to 56-year-old Glenn Ranger’s guilty plea, from no later than 2004, he coerced a 10-year-old boy to engage in sexually explicit conduct in order to produce videos and pictures.
    The boy was unaware that Ranger was recording the abuse.
