• Indonesia Tsunami, Earthquake Kill 384, Leaves Hundreds Injured

    (CNN) — Rescue workers are hunting for survivors after a powerful earthquake hit the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and triggered a tsunami, killing at least 384 people.
    After the 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit Friday, water smashed into buildings and swept away homes in the coastal city of Palu, home to 350,000 people.
    More than 540 people are being treated in several local hospitals amid the massive destruction in Palu and 29 people are missing.

    (CNN Money) — Elon Musk agreed Saturday to step down as chairman of Tesla and pay a $20 million fine in a deal to settle charges brought this week by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
    Under the settlement, which requires court approval, Musk will be allowed to say as CEO but must leave his role as chairman of the board within 45 days. He cannot seek re-election for three years, according to court filings.

    HANCOCK, Md. (AP) — Columbia Gas Transmission is asking federal regulators for permission to start building a natural gas pipeline that would run through part of western Maryland and cross under the Potomac River near Hancock.
    The Herald-Mail reports TransCanada, which owns Columbia Gas, filed a formal request for a “partial notice to proceed” with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Sept. 20.

    (CNN) — Two police officers were killed in a shootout early Saturday in Brookhaven, Mississippi, a state official said.
    The officers, identified as Cpl. Zach Moak, 31, and Patrolman James White, 35, were responding to a call about shots fired around 5 a.m., Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said.

    ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland’s House speaker says he plans to make campaign and other public appearances soon after recovering from an unscheduled bypass surgery.

    ELKTON, Md. (AP) — Officials are pointing fingers over the 2015 dismissal of charges against a man charged two years later in a fatal workplace shooting.
    In 2017, authorities say Radee Prince shot five co-workers at a Maryland granite company, killing three. A trial is pending in that case, but he’s been sentenced to 40 years in prison for shooting a man in Delaware the same day.

  • BPD Investigate Afternoon Shooting In SE Baltimore

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Police are investigating a shooting reported in Southeast Baltimore Saturday afternoon.
    Officers were on patrol in the 400 block of N. Milton Avenue when they heard gunshots at around 12:45 p.m.
    A short time later, officers were called to an area hospital for a walk-in shooting victim. When they arrived, they found a 25-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his upper body.
    Investigators believe the victim was in the 2400 block of Jefferson Street when he was shot.

  • Baltimore County Firefighter Injured In Motorcycle Accident

    Woodlawn, MD (WJZ) — A career Baltimore County firefighter was critically injured this morning when his motorcycle crashed on his way to work at the Westview Fire Station.
    Officials say they were called to the crash at Woodlawn and Linus drives at 6:27a.m.
    The 26-year-old and seven-year veteran of the the Baltimore County Fire Department is currently listed in critical but stable condition at the R Adams Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

    TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) — Towson University is starting a new memorial scholarship in the name of slain Baltimore County police officer Amy Caprio.

  • Virginia Bald Eagle To Be Released Back Into Wild After Injuries

    VIRGINIA (WJZ) — A bald eagle that was found in Virginia with serious injuries is set to be released.
    The eagle was discovered along the Potomac River last month with an injured wing from a possible fight with another eagle.
    It was treated at the Wildlife Center of Virginia where it was found to be dehydrated, infested with lice and suffering a deep puncture wound on its triceps.
    The center nursed the eagle back to health and is expected to be released into the wild this weekend.

    Sony Pictures has released the first photo of the actor as Fred Rogers from the upcoming and as-yet-untitled film about the iconic children’s show host.
