    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Tomorrow is the first day of school in Baltimore City and the fall semester begins on a high note.
    Just last week the PARCC assessment tests showed Baltimore city students lead the region in gains in both English and math.

  • Rt. 50 Accident Draws Attention To Surge Of Accidents On Road

    ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) — Two people are dead and another person is facing charges after a motorcycle crash Sunday morning in Annapolis.
    Investigators say the crash took place around 12:50 a.m. on eastbound U.S Route 50 at Ridgely Avenue and involved a silver Ford Expedition that crashed head-on into a motorcycle.
    Two people were on the motorcycle at the time of the accident and both the male and female victims were declared deceased at the scene.

  • State Health Makes Narcan Kits Accessible To First Responders

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Baltimore’s health commissioner recently released a figure stating that last year in Baltimore City, 761 people died from an overdose. The fire department is working to step up with a way to save lives for people who don’t want to go to the hospital.
    On average, two people die per day of overdoses in Baltimore. Nationally, 200 people a day are dying.

  • Maryland State Fair Expects Higher Attendance Rates

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The Maryland State Fair expects increased attendance this year compared to years past.
    Good weather and the start of school being pushed back after Labor Day are credited for more people going to the fair.
    State officials said the long summer break was expected to generate an additional $74 million in economic activity statewide and add more than $7 million in revenue to both state and local governments.

    SUITLAND, Md. (AP) — Two men have wounds that don’t appear to be life-threatening after a shooting in Maryland.
    News outlets report that the two men were shot late Sunday at an apartment complex in Suitland, not far from Washington.
    Police say the men were taken to a hospital with wounds that don’t appear to be life-threatening.
    Police say the shooting happened around 11:20 p.m. Officers found the victim with wounds to their lower bodies.

    SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Video shot from a helicopter shows a woman leading Texas troopers on a high-speed chase and crashing into a pickup, then taking off on foot holding a baby in a carrier.

  • Coast Guard Brings Man To Shore After Spear-Gun Injury

    OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — A man was injured in a spear gun accident on a boat off Maryland.
    The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the Coast Guard got a distress call about a man injured by a spear gun on a boat off Ocean City. A helicopter and two boats responded.
    The helicopter got there first and sent down a rescue swimmer to provide medical care until a boat got there.

    (CNN) — US forces in Afghanistan confirmed Sunday that the head of ISIS in the country was killed in a strike a little over a week ago.
    The strike, on Saturday, August 25, was in the eastern area of Nangarhar province and killed Abu Sayed Orakzai, according to a statement from US forces in Afghanistan.
