  • Father Protecting His Children Killed By Polar Bear In Canada

    (CBS NEWS/CBS LOCAL)– A 31-year-old father was killed this week in a polar bear attack while protecting his children in Canada’s northernmost territory of Nunavut, according to Canadian media reports. The man, Aaron Gibbons, was unarmed when the bear attacked him on Sentry Island, which is located near the predominantly Inuit community of Arviat, CBC News reports.

    COCOA BEACH, Fla. (CBS Local) – Officials in Florida are trying to figure out what happened to a baby shark that was found in a beach garbage can.
    WKMG reports that the carcass of the dangerous sea creature was discovered at Shepard Park on Cocoa Beach on July 3. Staff with the local volunteer group “Keep Brevard Beautiful” found the shark mixed in with plastic bottles and other trash.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A 29-year-old repeat offender is back in jail after police say they arrested him with a loaded gun.
    Terrell Tomlin was arrested on July 4 in the 5300 block of Nelson Ave.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Holabird Avenue will be closed for one month between Newkirk Street and Ponca Street in Baltimore City.
    The closure is a part of the Maryland Transportation Authority’s project to relocate the utilities on Holabird Avenue.

    ROCKVILLE, Md. (WJZ) — A 9-week-old puppy was rescued on the Fourth of July after it got stuck in a pipe in Rockville.
    According to Montgomery County Fire and EMS, the puppy was stuck 7-feet down in a 6-inch pipe in the ground.

    WELD COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – Health officials in Weld County say 21 people were exposed to rabies — making it the largest rabies exposure case for that county, according to officials.
    A woman found a baby raccoon and took it to her home after it was abandoned. The animal tested positive for rabies, but not before the 21 people were exposed to it.
    Since then, those patients have started receiving post-exposure treatment.

    (CNN) – After a young woman’s toenails started to separate from her toes, a doctor finally zeroed in on the reason: a fish pedicure, according to a report published Tuesday in the journal JAMA Dermatology.
