• Police Investigating After Human Remains Found In Howard County

    COLUMBIA, Md. (WJZ) — Police are investigating after a landscape worker found human remains in a wooded area in Columbia.
    Howard County Police officers were called to the 12200 block of Green Meadow Drive around 3:15 p.m. Friday.
    The skeletal remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
    Police have not yet provided additional information, such as the identity of the person or how long the remains have been there.
    An investigation is ongoing.

  • Historic Western Maryland Theater To Undergo Restoration

    HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — A century-old theater in western Maryland is undergoing a $13 million expansion and renovation.
    Gov. Larry Hogan joined local officials Saturday in Hagerstown for groundbreaking ceremonies at The Maryland Theatre.
    The venue was built in 1915 and draws about 100,000 visitors a year.
    It suffered a fire in 1974 that nearly led to its demolition.
    Plans call for a doubling of available space.
    The state has committed $5 million to the restoration and expansion project.

    MOUNT RAINIER, Md. (AP) — Officials have announced that a police chief in Maryland will retire.
    The Washington Post reports that officials announced Friday that Mount Rainier Police Chief Michael E. Scott will retire from the department. Scott came to Mount Rainier after working for the Maryland-National Capital Park Police for more than 20 years.

  • Funeral Set For National Guardsman Killed In Ellicott City Flood

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Funeral arrangements have been set for the National Guardsman and Air Force veteran who was swept away by the floodwaters in Ellicott City while trying to save a woman.
    A public visitation for Eddison “Eddie” Hermond will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at The Church at Severn Run, located at 8187 Telegraph Rd. in Severn, Maryland. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Hermond will be buried at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, located at 1122 Sunris
  • Body Recovered from Sandy Point State Park

    ANNAPOLIS, MD (WJZ) — Maryland Natural Resources Police are investigating a water-related death that occurred just before midnight at Sandy Point State Park.
    Anne Arundel County fire department divers assisted Natural Resources Police in recovering the body of 50-year-old Melquicedec Coreas-Gomez of Glen Burnie.
    Attempts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful and an autopsy will be performed on Saturday.
    Investigators are still trying to determine what lead to the his death.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — New crime-fighting technology is in operation in Baltimore. It’s called “ShotSpotter” and it notifies police when and where shots are fired.
    It’s a real-time alert system that uses audio sensors to hear shots and map out locations for police on their smartphones.
