    ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A judge has denied a request to remove a former state senator’s name from the primary ballot after the former official pleaded guilty to fraud charges in a federal bribery case.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A grim report from the National Institute on Drug Abuse: Maryland is among the top five states with the highest rates of opioid-related overdose deaths. Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings has introduced federal legislation to fight the opioid epidemic nationwide.
    That same report says the death rate in Maryland has consistently been above the national average since since 1999.
    The epidemic nationwide has gone from prescription painkillers to heroin and now to fentanyl.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The ATF Baltimore Field Division has announced they have doubled the reward offered for the arrests of three murder suspects.

  • Police Arrest Teen, Identify Man Killed In Double Shooting

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Police have arrested a 17-year-old, and identified the man he is accused of killing during a double shooting Thursday morning in Baltimore.
    17-year-old Eric Gilyard has been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, second-degree attempted murder, and related firearms charges, in the murder of 30-year-old Walter Baynes.
    Another victim, a 69-year-old man, was also taken to a local hospital.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A man found guilty of strangling his pregnant girlfriend is set to spend the next 10 years behind bars.
    Jeremiah Savage was sentenced to 25 years in prison, with all but 10 years suspended. He was convicted of two counts of assault, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of a regulated firearm after a disqualifying conviction, and unlawful possession of a short barreled shotgun back in February.

    (CNN) — Two deputies were killed at a restaurant in Florida by a shooter who fired through a window and was found dead outside the business, the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

  • Police: Highway Rest Stop Safe, Suspicious Package Found

    BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) — State troopers say a Maryland highway rest stop is safe after a “suspicious package” was discovered outside.
    Maryland State Police said Maryland House was evacuated around 4:40 p.m. Thursday. Both ramps to the rest stop facility were shut down.
    Troopers did not immediately disclose any other specifics about the package.
    No injuries have been reported.

  • Felon Indicted For His Gun Discharging, Injuring Baltimore Cop During Arrest

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A repeat offender has been indicted for his gun going off and injuring an officer during a scuffle while he was being taken into custody last year, prosecutors say.
    Baltimore Police responded to the 800 block of Bridgeview Avenue on Nov. 29 and found Allen Johnson with a firearm in his waistband, according to the Department of Justice. When officers approached Johnson, prosecutors say he turned away from officers and reached for his waistband.
