    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A midshipman at the Naval Academy in Annapolis has been dismissed for his use of a racial slur.
    Ted Colter, from New York, was expelled at the end of February.
    Colter is accused of using a racial slur for African Americans three times when talking with other midshipmen.

  • Officials Announce Plans To Open ‘Stabilization’ Center

    BALTIMORE (AP) — State and local officials have announced plans to open a “stabilization” center in Baltimore to help people who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
    The center — the first of its kind in Maryland — will be open 24 hours a day. Patients who meet the criteria will be transported to the center instead of being taken to an emergency room. The center will provide medical care and connect patients with behavioral health and social services.

    BALTIMORE (AP) — A Baltimore board has authorized a city plan to extend a multimillion dollar contract with the country’s top vendor of body cameras for police.
    The city’s Board of Estimates on Wednesday amended an existing $11.7 million contract with Axon Enterprise Inc, an Arizona-based company formerly known as Taser International.

    ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The Maryland General Assembly has approved an automatic voter registration bill.
    The House of Delegates voted 93-46 for the measure Wednesday. The Senate passed it 31-13.
    The bill designates agencies to register residents to vote, unless the applicant declines to register or is determined not to be eligible. For example, if an eligible Maryland voter renews a driver’s license, the person would be informed they are being registered, unless they say no.

  • Feds: Detainee At Airport For Deportation Escaped In Taxi

    NEW YORK (AP) — Federal authorities say an immigration detainee about to be deported to Senegal escaped custody at New York’s Kennedy Airport and fled in a taxi.
    A spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement says Mohamadou Lamine Mbacke was in the custody of its agents at the airport Tuesday night when he bolted and got into a cab.
    The agency says Mbacke entered the country lawfully in 2005 but violated the terms of his status.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A 51-year-old man was killed and his 97-year-old grandmother was critically injured in an overnight house fire in Arbutus.
    Two other adults have non-life-threatening injuries, according to Baltimore County authorities.

  • Baltimore Co. Man Convicted In Murder Of Ex-Wife, Her Boyfriend

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A Baltimore County jury convicted an Owings Mills man Tuesday of the 2017 murder of his ex-wife and her boyfriend.
    Dominick Daniel Hursey, 44, faces a possible sentence of life without parole after being found guilty of two counts of first degree murder. His ex-wife, Chinika Shari Hursey and her boyfriend, Steven Scott Campbell, were found shot to death April 3, 2017.
    Campbell was also convicted of two gun-related charges.

  • 1 Dead In Baltimore County Fatal Fire

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Officials say one person is dead and three others are at the hospital after a fire in Baltimore County Wednesday morning.
    Authorities say the fire broke out in a home in the 900 block of Courtney Road in the Arbutus section of the county.

    BRYANS ROAD, Md. (AP) — Authorities say a Maryland corrections officer is accused of attacking his wife in her sleep and repeatedly stabbing her with a knife.
    News outlets report 45-year-old Armando Quispe Rodriguez, a Prince George’s County corrections officer, was arrested Monday on attempted murder and other charges.
