    Maryland’s Highest Court Approves Bail Reform Rule Changes

    ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland’s highest court has approved changes to the state’s pretrial system so people are not held in jail simply because they can’t afford bail.The court’s seven judges unanimously approved the changes on Tuesday. They will be effective July 1.
    The change comes after the court heard hours of testimony last month on rule changes proposed by the Standing Committee on Rules and Practice and Procedure.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A suspect has died after he was shot by a police officer Tuesday afternoon during a police-involved shooting in west Baltimore.
    The shooting happened at about 3 p.m., near Monroe St. and Frederick Ave.
    The suspect was taken to Shock Trauma where he later died. Baltimore City Police spokesman T.J. Smith says the suspect got out of jail just yesterday, on felony drug and gun charges.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) — Baltimore Police and a mental health organization are launching a pilot program to offer some drug offenders treatment instead of jail.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who broke into a Maryland mosque.
    They hope the $1,000 reward will help identify the person caught on surveillance video going through drawers and other items in the office of the Islamic Center of Maryland (ICM) in Gaithersburg.

    COLUMBIA, Md. (WJZ) — Howard County Council has approved a controversial sanctuary county bill in a 3-2 vote. The bill will now go to County Executive Allan Kittleman. However, Kittleman has already said that he will veto any such bill.
    “We are trying to find a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist,” he says.

    BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Bao Bao, the three-year-old panda at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. will be leaving the U.S. to live in China in two weeks.
    On February 21, 2017, Bao Bao will be heading to Chengdu, China by FedEx. A keeper and veterinarian from the National Zoo will accompany her.
    As part of the breeding agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association, all panda cubs born at the National Zoo must be relocated to China before they turn four-years-old.
