• Man expected to survive after being shot Thursday evening

  A man was shot Thursday evening in a neighborhood south of Valley Plaza mall and suffered what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries, according to Bakersfield police.
  The shooting occurred at 9:17 p.m. in the 2800 block of Morin Court, south of Wilson and east of Wible roads.

  In January, Bakersfield Police Department response times in the south-southeast "valley" zone ran as high as eight minutes for the highest-priority calls.
  In March, the BPD was able to get Priority 1 call response times down to 5 1/2 to six minutes, Assistant Police Chief Lyle Martin said. While much better, they still didn't meet the department's goal to get to those calls in less than five minutes.

  BAKERSFIELD, A Kern County deputy public defender is herself in legal trouble after being accused of crashing her county-owned vehicle into a ravine while drunk.    According to the CHP, on March 23 at 6:30 p.m, 28-year-old Sarah Schumacher was headed down Whisler Road when she ran a stop sign and crashed into a ravine off Highway 43 in Wasco.
