  • Longtime country singer, songwriter Mel Tillis dies

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Mel Tillis, the affable longtime country star who wrote hits for Kenny Rogers, Ricky Skaggs and many others, and overcame a stutter to sing on dozens of his own singles, has died.
    A spokesman for Tillis, Don Murry Grubbs, said Tillis died early Sunday at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida. He was 85.
    Grubbs said Tillis battled intestinal issues since 2016 and never fully recovered. The suspected cause of death is respiratory failure.

    AUSTIN (KXAN) – The African-American Cultural and Heritage Facility celebrated a re-opening in East Austin, Saturday.
    The City of Austin recently added the facility to its Cultural Arts Division. To mark the occasion, an open house showcased the newest upgrades. Those updates include a new mural, a dance studio, meeting rooms and a computer lab.

    KINGWOOD, Texas (KXAN) — Friends and family said goodbye Saturday to the Texas State University student who was found dead after a fraternity event.
    Matthew Ellis was laid to rest in Kingwood, Texas, near his hometown of Humble northeast of Houston.

    TOKYO (AP) — A Japanese tug boat lost propulsion and drifted into a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer during a towing exercise Saturday, the Navy said.
