    AUSTIN (KXAN) – Tropical Storm Harvey could bring high winds and flooding rain to central Texas this weekend. The storm could have an impact on outdoor events planned for this weekend.
    In Austin, the storm is forecast to move in on the final day of PRIDE Week, an annual celebration of the LGBTQ community. The Austin PRIDE Festival is scheduled for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Fiesta Gardens. The PRIDE Parade, which draws thousands of participants and spectators, is scheduled for 8 p.

    AUSTIN (KXAN) — All first responders in Central Texas are on standby as everyone waits to see what Hurricane Harvey does after it makes landfall.
    The Austin/Travis County Emergency Operations Center says as of 2 p.m. Thursday, there have been no requests to activate the Capital Area Shelter Hub Plan, which would provide shelter assistance for people who need to evacuate due to Harvey.     AUSTIN (KXAN) — Blue Bell Ice Cream hopes its new flavor will make people go bananas — and just in time for National Banana Split Day on Friday, too.
    The company announced Thursday it released a new flavor called “Banana Split Sundae,” with a banana ice cream base and filled with crushed pineapple, maraschino cherries, chopped roasted almonds and swirls of strawberry and chocolate sauces.

    AUSTIN (KXAN/AP) — The U.S. Navy has identified one sailor who died and nine others who remain missing after the USS John McCain collided with an oil tanker near Singapore.
    Divers recovered the remains of Electronics Technician 3rd Class Kenneth Aaron Smith, who the Navy listed as being from New Jersey. His mother said the 22-year-old grew up in Novi, Michigan, and moved to Norfolk, Virginia, as a teenager with his father.

    CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a disgruntled employee shot one person and is holding hostages in a restaurant in an area of Charleston, South Carolina, that is popular with tourists.
    Mayor John Tecklenburg said at a news conference that the shooting Thursday at Virginia’s in downtown Charleston was not an act of terrorism or racism.

    NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (KXAN) — Students in New Braunfels ISD will get an extra day of summer as the district decides to push back its school start date because of Hurricane Harvey.

  • Almost 1,000 customers affected in Round Rock power outage

    ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — Power outages in northwest Round Rock are affecting almost 1,000 customers, down from 15,000 earlier in the day, according to Oncor.
    The outage is reportedly on both sides of Interstate 35 and north of Texas 45. Oncor said it should have power restored by 12:30 p.m. It did not specify what caused the power outage.

    A Category 3 hurricane has the potential for significant loss of life and damages. A Cat 3 has sustained winds of 111-129 mph.
    During the 2016 hurricane season, four storms reached major hurricane strength (category 3 or higher). Hurricane Matthew was the first category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic since Felix in 2007.     AUSTIN (KXAN) — Farm to Market Road 969 has one lane open in both directions in east Austin after a collision between an 18-wheeler and a car.

  • Deadly crash kills 1 on FM 1626

    AUSTIN (KXAN) — Department of Public Safety troopers are investigating a deadly crash that happened Wednesday night on FM 1626.
    The agency is not releasing many details at this point but we do know at least one person was killed in the multi-car crash. It happened at 11 p.m. Wednesday along the county line between Travis and Hays counties.

    AUSTIN (KXAN) — A Lake Travis Independent School District school bus with no school children on board was involved in a crash Wednesday afternoon.

    SHREVEPORT, La. (KXAN) — Police in Shreveport, La. released surveillance video of a woman who managed to steal numerous bottles of booze from a liquor store last Friday.
    The cameras captured the woman coming into the store and initially, she started putting bottles in her purse. But as she continued “shopping,” she started hiding bottles in her pants and even her top.
    As she left the store, she put one bottle on the counter and walked out.
