• Cigarettes ignite balcony fire at NW Austin apartment complex

    AUSTIN (KXAN) – Firefighters extinguished a small balcony fire on the third floor of an apartment complex in northwest Austin Sunday afternoon, said the Austin Fire Department.
    The call for the fire came in about 3:45 p.m. to the Estate on Quarry Lake Apartments in the 4600 block of Seton Center Parkway near the intersection of US 183 and West Braker Lane.

  • US bombers fly over South Korea after North’s 2nd ICBM test

    SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The United States flew two supersonic bombers over the Korean Peninsula on Sunday in a show of force against North Korea following the country’s latest intercontinental ballistic missile test. The U.S. also said it conducted a successful test of a missile defense system located in Alaska.

  • East Texas man rescues grandson, 3, after fall into water well

    VAN, Texas (KETK and AP) – Authorities in East Texas said a 3-year old boy is OK after he was pulled from a water well by his grandfather after he fell 30 feet into it.
    It happened early Saturday morning in the city of Van, about 70 miles east of Dallas, said the Van Fire Department.
    Firefighters said the young boy walked over the well cover, which was brittle and collapsed.

  • 1-year anniversary of deadly Texas hot air balloon crash

    LOCKHART, Texas (AP) — Friends and relatives of 16 people killed a year ago Sunday when a hot air balloon crashed in Central Texas have marked the anniversary with a church service and memorial flowers.
    A few dozen people attended a church service Saturday and then went to the site of the July 30, 2016, crash near Lockhart, about 30 miles (48.28 kilometers) south of Austin.

  • Murder suspect kills himself after shooting at officers during car chase

    HILL COUNTY, Texas (KWKT) — Two men are dead following a chase that spanned two Central Texas counties.
    Hill County Sheriff’s Office says one man shot another man in Abbott, Texas on Friday around 9 p.m. in the area of Interstate 35.
    Fifty-nine-year-old Dennis Pavlas from West, Texas later died at Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest Hospital in Waco.
    The deputies say the suspect caught the attention of Robinson police a few hours later, who then chased after him.

  • State of Texas: Lawmakers aim to limit local control

    AUSTIN (KXAN) – Texas lawmakers are looking to limit how much cities can spend. Senate Bill 18, which caps how much city councils or county commissioners can spend, was quickly approved by the Texas Senate last week. It’s one of several measures limiting local governments. Senators also approved bills to put new limits on a city’s ability to annex land and a measure to cut back local rules to protect trees on private property.

    HOUSTON (AP) — Houston police say an MS-13 gang member known by the name “Terror” and charged with two murders in the Houston area has been arrested in Virginia.
    Police say 20-year-old Douglas Alexander Herrera-Hernandez was taken into custody Saturday in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington.

    AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man led police on a 30 minute chase after taking his baby from the mother, police say. Officers say they received a call at 3 a.m. Saturday that the man had taken the baby and the mother believed the circumstances were dangerous.

  • Teenager stabbed in north Austin

    AUSTIN (KXAN) — A male teenager is in the hospital after he was stabbed in North Austin early Sunday morning, said Austin-Travis County EMS.
    It happened at about 6:39 a.m. in the 9400 block of North Interstate 35 near East Rundberg Lane. Medics transported the teen to Dell Seton Medical Center with potentially serious injuries. They said the injuries were not expected to be life-threatening.
    Austin police said no arrests have been made in the stabbing.
  • Teen stabbed, police searching for suspects

    Austin (KXAN)–A teenager is in the hospital after he was stabbed near  the intersection of North IH-35 and East Rundberg Lane.
    Austin Travis County Emergency Medical Services tweeted that the teen had been transported to Dell Seton Medical Center with injuries that are serious but not expected to be life threatening.
    Austin Police say they are still searching for the suspects but so far they are receiving unclear information from the victim.

  • 3 killed after truck hits group helping fallen motorcyclist

    LYTLE, Texas (AP) — Authorities say three people were killed after a truck hit a group of people who were helping a motorcyclist who had fallen off his bike and landed on a roadway near San Antonio.
    The Texas Department of Public Safety says the motorcyclist was riding on a frontage road of Interstate 35 near Lytle at around 2 a.m. Saturday when he fell off his bike. Lytle is located about 25 miles southwest of San Antonio.
