  CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) — U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Sunday that it won’t grant an easement for the Dakota Access oil pipeline in southern North Dakota.
  The decision is a victory for the several thousand camped near the construction site, who’ve said for months that the four-state, $3.8 billion project would threaten a water source and cultural sites.

• Police: ‘Postal Grinch’ caught opening post office packages

  BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man is being accused of being a Christmas Grinch after authorities say he broke into a post office and tried to steal packages.
  Francis Keller, 56, was arrested by the Boynton Beach Police Department and charged with burglary. Police say they found him inside a post office work room using scissors to open packages.

  OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Officials say the death toll has risen to 24 in a fire that ripped through a late-night dance party in a converted warehouse in Oakland, California, and they expect that number to climb as the search continues.

  CHARLOTTE HALL, Md. (AP) — Even beavers are getting in the holiday spirit.
  That’s what one sheriff’s office discovered this week when it spotted a curious beaver checking out Christmas decorations at a dollar store outside of Washington, D.C.
  The St. Mary County Sheriff’s office in Maryland says the beaver walked through the door at the Dollar General on Monday, wandered into the Christmas section and knocked a few items over before being safely removed by animal control.

  WACO, Texas (AP) — One juror in a Central Texas robbery trial apparently forgot to tell her family she’d be working late deliberating in the case, prompting relatives to file a missing person report.
