• Repair needs delay Alaska ferry scheduled for service in May

  KETCHIKAN, Alaska (AP) – An Alaska Marine Highway System ferry will not depart in May as scheduled.
  The Ketchikan Daily News reported Saturday that the Tustumena ferry was found with extensive steel wastage in the engine room. The system is working with the U.S. Coast Guard on a repair plan to make the 53-year-old vessel safe again.
  The ferry went in for a scheduled annual overhaul mid-March and was expected to return to service May 27.

• Moderate earthquake shakes Southcentral Alaska

  Just before 8:30 p.m. Saturday, an earthquake shook Southcentral, Alaska.
  The Alaska Earthquake Center says the quake registered as a magnitude 5.2 and was about 40 miles deep. They described the earthquake as a “typical slab event”.
  The center of the earthquake was 10 miles north of Ninilchik, 29 miles southwest of Kenai and about 91 miles southwest of Anchorage.

• Hunt opens for muskox stranded on Triangle Island

  A muskox is stranded on Triangle Island, a small piece of land about three miles north of Nunivak Island. There’s little food and no fresh water on the small island. And the state doesn’t expect the animal to survive for long.

  ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The Alaska Earthquake Center reports that a magnitude 4.9 earthquake hit part of the Aleutian Islands chain.
  The center says the quake struck about 12:43 p.m. Saturday Alaska time in the Fox Islands region of the Aleutians. The epicenter was 69 miles (110 kilometers) east of the Amukta Pass.
  The quake had a depth of about 7 miles (11 kilometers.)
  There are no reports of damage from the earthquake.

  WASHINGTON (AP) — The Interior Department has released a list of 27 national monuments it is reviewing under a presidential order, including Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante in Utah and Katahdin Woods and Waters in Maine.

  The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Eastern Alaska Range effective Saturday afternoon.
  The warning is in effect through 10 p.m. Sunday.
  The NWS says south winds will reach 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.
