Bethel DMV office to close indefinitely starting May 1
If you need a new driver’s license, get it before the end of the week. Starting May 1, the Bethel DMV Office will be closing indefinitely until a new employee is hired, according to a report by KYUK.
Current DMV employee Rebecca Phillip is leaving the office at the end of the month to take another job in Bethel. She says while the position is empty, no new licenses will be issued in town. All other DMV services can be accessed online.

Pilot, company culture blamed for 2015 fatal Alaska crash
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – The National Transportation Safety Board says a pilot’s decision to fly using visual flight rules when conditions called for instrument rules was a cause of a fatal crash of a sightseeing flight in Alaska.
The board says the airplane company’s culture and lack of a formal safety program also were behind the crash that killed nine people two years ago near Ketchikan, Alaska.

APD asks for public’s help finding missing man
Have you seen 27-year-old Seth Q. Harrison? The Anchorage Police Department is asking for the public’s help locating him. The agency said there are concerns for his well-being.According to a release from APD, Harrison was last seen at his home in the Lake Otis Parkway and Dowling Road area at 8 p.m. Monday. Police said the concerns for him stem from comments he made “that would suggest he may harm himself.”

Soggy Seattle lives up to name, breaks another rain record
SEATTLE (AP) – Soggy Seattle has broken another rainfall record.
The National Weather Service says the city measured 44.67 inches (114 centimeters) of rain between October and so far in April.
That makes it the wettest such period since records began in 1895.
Meteorologist Mike McFarland in the service’s Seattle office says it’s the second consecutive year that the city topped the rainfall record for that 7-month period.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – A 53-year-old Kokhanok died after his all-terrain vehicle crashed on Iliamna Lake.

UAA to start surgical tech program to meet industry need
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – The University of Alaska Anchorage is preparing to launch a surgical technology program that will train students for positions in the state’s health care industry that have been difficult to fill.

A legal quirk that had criminalized hunting waterfowl at the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge on private parcels was removed Monday by the Juneau Assembly.
Because some land in the refuge is privately owned, different rules for shotgun use technically apply.

PORTLAND, Maine — A group of marine scientists says collisions of whales and boats off of the New England coast may be more common than previously thought.
The scientists focused on the humpback whale population in the southern Gulf of Maine, a body of water off of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Man gets 4 years in Anchorage bank robbery
An Anchorage man has been sentenced to serve four years behind bars following a conviction for a 2016 bank robbery.
Scott Hartvig McDowell, 49, was sentenced to four years in prison and three years of supervised release in connection with the Alaska USA Federal Credit Union robbery that occurred on August 2, 2016.
McDowell presented a note to the bank teller demanding $50 and $100, who then handed over approximately $2700. McDowell fled and was apprehended several days later.

Aurora watchers spot something new in night sky
Citizen scientists looking at the northern lights appear to have stumbled upon a new natural phenomenon. Members of the Facebook group Alberta Aurora Chasers posted photos of a mysterious purple streak cutting through the night’s sky. Juneau playground fire ‘possibly arson’
A fire broke out Monday evening at a popular child’s playground in Juneau.
The Twin Lakes playground went up in flames in the 5 o’clock hour Monday evening, and the $250,000-worth of playground equipment is a total loss.
No injuries were reported, according to Capital City Fire and Rescue.
The Fire Marshal is investigating the blaze as a possible arson, and anyone who may have photos or videos or may have been a witness is asked to call the Fire Marshal’s Office.

Empty office spaces reflect sagging economy, low oil prices
Vacant buildings and “For Lease” signs seem to be a growing part of the landscape around Anchorage.

HOUSTON (AP) – A spokesman for former President George H.W. Bush says the nation’s 41st president will remain in a Houston hospital for a few more days of observation while he recovers from a mild case of pneumonia.

CORYDON, Ind. (AP) – Authorities say former “Happy Days” star Erin Moran likely died from cancer at her southern Indiana home.
