  There is just under a thousand tons of herring left to catch in the Sitka sac roe herring fishery after the last opening on Saturday. That day, fishing was open for three hours and 20 minutes bringing in about 5,200 tons of herring. That brings the season’s total harvest to about 13,500 tons.

• Avalanche Engulfs Student Trip In Japan, Leaving At Least 8 Presumed Dead

  An avalanche struck a Japanese ski resort midmorning on Monday, overwhelming a student mountaineering exercise and leaving at least eight people with no vital signs, according to local authorities. Some 40 other students and teachers were injured in the avalanche, which hit the area in Tochigi Prefecture, nearly 100 miles north of Tokyo.
  As the BBC notes, Japanese rescue officials typically will not pronounce victims dead until they receive confirmation from doctors at a hospital.

• Juneau man arrested after Friday standoff

  A Juneau man was arrested by police after two-and-a-half-hour armed standoff late Friday evening.
  Donald Ray Hosier, 34, was charged with third-degree misconduct involving weapons and two counts of second-degree assault after the incident in the 3000 block of Nowell Avenue in West Juneau.
  Police said a woman resident reported being assaulted and locked out of her apartment by a man with a firearm. Two children were reportedly in the apartment when the incident occurred.

• Flow reduced in leaking underwater Alaska gas pipeline

  ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – The owner of a leaking underwater pipeline has reduced the amount of natural gas spewing into Alaska’s Cook Inlet by about half.
  Hilcorp Alaska LLC over the weekend lowered line pressure.
  The company says the leak will be cut to 85,000 to 115,000 cubic feet of processed natural gas per day.
  Hilcorp is waiting for ice to clear so divers can safely repair the pipeline and expects to deploy divers within 10 days.

  Fili’s Pizza has dropped its application to turn its restaurant into a liquor store, according to a story published by KYUK Public Media.
  Bethel City Council issued a protest of the license in February, mainly because of the site’s location. • Sunken South Korea ferry lifted from sea floor

  South Korean salvage crews have raised a sunken, 6,800-ton ferry out of the water and loaded it onto a transport vessel that will carry it to a port.
  The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said Friday that the upper side of the Sewol had been lifted from the seafloor, where it was lying sideways after it sank on April 16, 2014 in an accident that killed 304 passengers, including many students on a high school trip.
