• Deaths of loose pets prompt Fairbanks animal cruelty fines

  People caught killing loose pets without cause in Fairbanks face new fines that were passed after several animal deaths.
  The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the borough assembly voted 7-1 to fine people $500 for a first animal cruelty violation and $1,000 for a second offense.
  Anyone who kills a pet could also be fined $100 if they take longer than a day to notify the owner or animal control.

  BEIJING (AP) – Chinese are heading to temples and fairs to wish for an auspicious start to the Lunar New Year.

• Alaska Airlines pilot donates kidney to co-worker

  How far would you go to help a friend? Two Alaska Airlines co-workers will be putting that question to the test when one donates a kidney to the other in March.

• Midtown businesses report spike in burglaries, shoplifting

  A midtown Anchorage business owner said crime in his neighborhood is on the rise.
  Richard Hale has owned Hale’s Technical Service at 3207 Denali Street for 19 years.

• 1 charged with murder for Muldoon shooting death

  A suspect in a Muldoon shooting that left one man dead and another injured turned himself in to Anchorage police Friday, Anchorage District Attorney Clint Campion confirmed. The Anchorage Correctional Complex said 23-year-old Christopher Birotte was booked around 4 p.m. Friday. He is charged with second-degree murder and second-degree assault.
  Police said 19-year-old Tiwan Johnson Jr., and another man arrived at the hospital with gunshot wounds early Tuesday morning. Johnson died later that day.

  Bob Walp, co-founder for General Communications Inc. (GCI) and the company’s first president, has died, the company said. He was 89.
  Walp, along with company president and CEO Ron Duncan, founded GCI in 1979. They operated the company from Walp’s small apartment in Anchorage. GCI has grown over the years and is now a $2 billion publicly traded company.
