• Lack of water drove Alaska island mammoths to extinction

  BERLIN — Scientists say that one of the last surviving populations of woolly mammoths was likely driven to extinction by lack of drinking water.
  Mammoths lived on Alaska’s St. Paul Island in the Bering Sea until about 5,600 years ago. They never came into contact with humans, who only arrived on the island in 1787.

• Garbage truck strikes Anchorage building

  ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A garbage truck drove into an Anchorage business Monday, and falling debris injured an employee and a customer inside.
  Anchorage police say in a release that no major injuries were reported after the Alaska Waste truck struck the Alaska Check Cashing location near downtown Anchorage.

  The search for the abandoned fishing vessel Alaska Juris has been called off.
  The unified command in charge of the search — consisting of the Coast Guard, Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Fishing Company of Alaska — in a news release say the vessel is presumed sunk in the Bering Sea in 5,400 feet of water.

• Troopers investigate death of Prince of Wales woman

  A Hydaburg woman died Sunday in a wooded area near Klawock on Prince of Wales Island.
  According to the online Alaska State Troopers dispatch, Troopers learned of the woman’s death a little after 5 p.m. Sunday. The woman’s identity has been tentatively released as Jodylee Guthrie, 27, and next of kin were notified.
  The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage for an autopsy and to confirm the identification.

• Fisherman found dead on boat near Wrangell

  Charles Richards
  A crew member on a fishing vessel west of Wrangell Island was found dead Saturday morning.
  Charles Richards, 28, of Seattle was found unresponsive in his bunk by a crew member.
  Wrangell Search and Rescue responded to the scene after the Coast Guard was notified about 5:47 am Saturday.
  Richards was taken to the Wrangell Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

• Knife discovered at Kodiak Community Archaeology site

  An archaeology program has discovered a primitive knife in their fourth year of digging the Kashevaroff site at Salonie Creek in Kodiak, one of the many pieces of evidence that point to the site having been a hunting camp.
