Getting Pollyanish about saving the environment
Sometimes a person can get unaccountably optimistic.
A lifelong Pollyana until about 7:35 p.m. on Nov. 8, 2016, I could be happy-go-lucky with the best of them. People are starving? Fortunately, in the form of berries and prickly pears, food grows by the roads, was my annoying attitude much of the time.
Sobered up since then, of course. Rolled with the punches. But, still. The punches.
Last week I returned to that power-of-positive-thinking nonsense in a Crazytown way because of news about, of a

Short-handed USC men get back into win column with win over Rutgers
LOS ANGELES — USC point guard Jordan Marsh strode around the court with a walking boot on his left leg on Saturday afternoon as his teammates warmed up.
He was on the bench for the game — day-to-day with a toe injury — instead of having his usual, speeding around defenders, irritating and disrupting them on defense while dribbling in for his own shots on offense.
But, once again, USC adapted to an injury and beat Rutgers 78-75 to get back into the win column.

Westwood wins San Pasqual Stakes to earn Big ’Cap try
ARCADIA — Last year, the late-developing gelding named Westwood played a supporting role in California’s racing drama, helping his stablemate Baeza to become one of the year’s top 3-year-olds.
Saturday, Westwood finally had his own day in the sun, and may have set himself up for more.
Westwood and jockey Kazushi Kimura took advantage of a potential front-runner’s scratch to grab the early lead and hold it for 1-1/8 miles in winning the San Pasqual Stakes by 2-3/4 lengths

Long Beach State can’t complete comeback in loss to Hawaii
LONG BEACH — Finding points to fill the scoring void left by the injury to Gavin Sykes wasn’t a problem for the Long Beach State men’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon.
Getting crucial stops on the defensive end was the bigger issue.
LBSU rallied from a 15-point deficit with just over seven minutes remaining against visiting Hawaii to get within one with 54 seconds left in their Big West Conference matchup, but the hosts couldn’t get over the hump in an 89-82 loss at

There’s something special about reading for pleasure. It’s not just about learning, but about nurturing our mental health, building empathy and keeping our creativity alive.
As an avid reader myself, it surprised me to learn that daily pleasure reading has dropped 40% over the past two decades, according to a recent study in the journal iScience. The research tracked Americans’ reading habits from 2003 to 2023, showing a steady decline of about 3% each year.

How February can make us feel cozy and help us slow down
    By Laura Sampson
February is the shortest month of the year, yet for many of us, it reliably feels like the longest. The holidays are behind us, spring is still far off and winter’s routines have settled into something heavy and familiar. But a recent study finds just five to 10 minutes of joyful activity per day improves happiness, reduces stress and enhances a person’s sense of control.
Instead of pushing through February’s doldrums, many people embrace a softer, kinder appro
