Fountain Valley demonstrators take a knee in George Floyd protest
About 200 demonstrators protesting the death of George Floyd stood along the edge of Mile Square Regional Park in Fountain Valley on Thursday, June 4, holding signs up to traffic.
The protesters chanted, “No justice, no peace,” “Black Lives Matter,” “Say his name, George Floyd,” and “Say her name, Breonna Taylor,” as cars passed by shortly after 1 p.m., some honking in support. The demonstrators were at the corner of Edinger Avenue and Euclid Stree -
Where UCLA stands at WR and TE entering the 2020 season
Losing a handful of passing targets to the transfer portal and with Devin Asiasi choosing to forgo his senior season for the NFL, the Bruins’ stock at wide receiver and tight end entering the 2020 season shows limited experience and lack of depth.
Here’s a breakdown of UCLA’s wide receiver and tight end position groups heading into the summer:
On the roster
At the top of the Bruins’ list for starters at the receiver position is Kyle Phillips. The San Marcos High alum is c -
Gambling returns to Las Vegas after historic casino closure
By Ken Ritter, The Associated Press
The casino coronavirus closure has ended. Cards are being dealt, dice are rolling and slot machines flashed and jingled for the first customers who started gambling again early Thursday in Las Vegas and throughout Nevada.
“The past few months have presented our city with an unprecedented challenge,” said Derek Stevens, owner of two downtown Las Vegas casinos that were shuttered along with all gambling establishments in March. “We are excited -

A cliff-side Mediterranean Revival-style compound in Laguna Beach, known for many years as Mariona and later Villa Rockledge, has sold for $12.5 million.
The figure is about a 54% decrease from the last asking price of $27 million.
Property records show an Idaho limited liability company with a Chino Hills address linked to business power player Ed Mylett, who has a net worth of $400 million, is the buyer.
Mylett, 49, is a best-selling author, keynote speaker and co-founder of an invitatio -
COVID-19 cases in Laguna Woods remain few; lawn bowling set to reopen Monday
Village Management Services CEO Jeff Parker on Tuesday, June 2, announced that the number of daily COVID-19 cases for the county jumped from the prior week’s average of 157 to 213 on Monday.
“That is something we’re going to want to continue to watch,” Parker said during his report at the regular Golden Rain Foundation meeting, noting the vulnerability of Laguna Woods Village’s senior community. Although cases are on the rise — including the highest number of -
Can housing’s ‘economic injustice’ be fixed?
If we’re going to be serious about lowering racial injustices, the nation’s uneven economic opportunities must also be discussed.
Nationwide protesting following the death of a Minnesota black man in police custody raises a host of questions about racial inequality, including a widening wealth gap that’s very apparent in housing. Just look at who owns the home they live in, as measured by the Census Bureau.
At the start of 2020, 65% of Americans were homeowners — down fro -
Coronavirus: California unemployment claims rise in most recent week
First-time claims for unemployment rose slightly in California during the most recent week, but longer-term patterns show job losses are dwindling statewide amid coronavirus-linked business shutdowns, federal officials reported Thursday.
Initial unemployment claims totaled nearly 230,500 in California the week ended May 30, up 27,200 from the 203,200 claims filed the previous week by workers who had lost their jobs, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

Risky mortgages back 10 weeks after dramatic crash
It was all the rage before coronavirus.
Mortgage lenders were funding deals that allowed everything from just listing liquid assets on the mortgage application with employment information being left blank. Another was 12 months of bank statement deposits as income proof alternative to tax returns. And, yet another example was bank and stock accounts being aggressively reformulated as high monthly returns to claim as monthly qualifying income.
Ten weeks ago, with the full force of COVID-19 conver -

The crowd observed 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silence, symbolizing how long a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on the neck of George Floyd, a black man, on May 25 in Minneapolis.
Speakers, including Tustin Mayor Allan Bernstein and Councilwoman Letitia Clark, then talked about the importance of peaceful pro -
Review: Even during coronavirus crisis, Taco María shines bright
Just before the lockdown order came in March, I dined again at Taco María in Costa Mesa. I ate poppyseed tostadas topped with Dungeness crab. They were exquisite. I enjoyed lamb birria infused with star anise and coffee. Chef Carlos Salgado had recently revamped the dining room with new banquettes that he built himself. The service was more polished than ever before, the wine pairings with each course even more sophisticated than I remembered from all previous visits.

Social distancing from my fridge and other pandemic challenges
These are difficult times.
My to-do list written throughout the years for that time I’d be free for chores and projects is now at the Smithsonian, a historic relic next to Pinocchio’s early promises.
For some, the days are leisurely. For me, since my refrigerator knows my name, my step counter stepped out the door from exhaustion. At first, this appliance would say, “Hey Jan, come take a look. You don’t have to pick anything, just look.”
Then it would taunt me to ta -
Patio tables are suddenly the best seats in the house in the coronavirus era
Too cold in winter, too hot in summer, hard metal chairs and battles with bees, flies and seagulls. Outdoor tables weren’t always the first choice at local restaurants but because the novel coronavirus is airborne, dining al fresco is now all the rage.
“Honestly, I think we’re going to make Southern California look like Italy where you eat outside all the time,” said restaurateur Bruno Serato. That’s what he discovered the very first night he reopened the Anah -
Master Gardener: Is it too late to plant roses?
Q: I live in Costa Mesa and I would like to know if it’s too late to plant the white rose bushes I see all around OC?
A: In Southern California, it’s never too late to plant rosebushes. The popular “Iceberg” roses are super hardy and will rebloom without constant deadheading. They are also available in pink and burgundy flowered varieties.
If you want to plant any perennials, it’s a good idea to do it sooner rather than later. June is still reasonably mild (at least -

Henry Rollins is one of the nicest guys ever to be typecast as the bad guy.

“With full honestly, I’m just glad for the work,” says Rollins, whose new movie “Dreamland” arrived this week. “Because I’ve not been to acting cl -
Hong Kong marks Tiananmen anniversary, defying a police ban
By ZEN SOO and KEN MORITSUGU
HONG KONG — Thousands of people in Hong Kong defied a police ban Thursday evening, breaking through barricades to hold a candlelight vigil on the 31st anniversary of China’s crushing of a democracy movement centered on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.
With democracy snuffed out in the mainland, the focus has shifted increasingly to semi-autonomous Hong Kong, where authorities for the first time banned the annual vigil that remembers victims of the 1989 c -

Market heating up after two-month coronavirus chill
The peak selling market in Southern California typically starts on Superbowl Sunday each year and extends through May. But with the onset of the stay-at-home orders in mid-March to contain the virus, the housing market was thrown on its ear.
Now that we are proceeding with the re-opening of our economy, the weather is warming up, and folks have spent their down time home shopping on every website they can find, demand is ramping up once again.
Let’s review where we are with the data. -

These tropical fruit trees and plants are thriving at a Southern California nursery
It’s amazing what you can do with a third of an acre of land.
Take Alex Silber, for example. On a piece of ground this size, he is growing 52 exotic fruit trees, shrubs, and vines, 9 exotic herbs and spices, and 4 pitaya cactus or dragon fruit species — red, pink, yellow, and white, with the yellow one being the rarest and sweetest of the lot. He is growing these mostly tropical species not only for his own enjoyment but to sell to the public as well.

1.9 million seek U.S. jobless aid even as reopenings slow layoffs
By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER
WASHINGTON — Nearly 1.9 million people applied for U.S. unemployment benefits last week, evidence that many employers are still cutting jobs even as the gradual reopening of businesses has slowed the pace of layoffs.
The total number of people who are receiving jobless aid rose slightly to 21.5 million, down from a peak of nearly 25 million two weeks ago but still at a historically high level. It shows that scattered rehiring is offsetting only some of the ongoing la -
Sacramento’s latest bid to undercut legislative transparency
Four years ago, despite fierce opposition from Democratic politicians, California voters passed Proposition 54, a constitutional amendment requiring the Legislature to be more transparent.
Nearly two-thirds of the state’s voters backed Proposition 54, which requires final versions of legislative bills to be in print and online at least 72 hours before final votes. It also requires the Legislature to make audiovisual recordings of its meetings and place them online within 24 hours.

When Jackie Saldana saw her 77-year-old father for the last time on March 13, the Glenhaven Healthcare nursing home in Glendale was just days away from locking its doors to the public to protect patients from the novel coronavirus.
At the time, Ricardo Saldana was in stable condition undergoing long-term care for a stroke he suffered in 2014. But within weeks, his daughter learned the nursing home had placed a resident who had been exposed to the virus in the same room with her father.

Hoornstra: A call for teams to act as civic institutions, not big businesses, for five months
If professional sports teams sell hope, baseball stands alone as the most hopeless sport in North America.
Negotiations to begin a 2020 season are going sideways at best. The Major League Baseball Players’ Association formally proposed a 114-game regular season Sunday. MLB team owners want a shorter season, reportedly close to 50 games, before the playoffs begin. Wednesday, multiple outlets reported that owners are not interested in countering the 114-game proposal. Commissioner Rob Manfre -

Outside Lands 2020: What’s the latest news on the festival?
Bay Area music fans might still be trying to hold onto the old saying “no news is good news.”
For that might mean that everything is OK with their beloved Outside Lands, given that organizers remain silent on the fate of this year’s festival.
Yet, given everything that’s going on with the coronavirus pandemic, it’s increasingly looking like a real long shot that the show will indeed go on as originally planned.
Judging solely by the festival’s website, sfoutsi -
