Could California really go it alone?
Gavin Newsom isn’t the first governor to describe California as a nation-state but he has been the term’s most vociferous gubernatorial exponent.
    What does it mean?
Newsom offered this explanation in a recent interview with The Atlantic magazine:
“Look, we’re the fifth largest economy in the world, 40 million strong, we’re as diverse a state as exists in this country, [with] 20-some percent of the state foreign-born.”

California should end the lockdowns before more liberties are lost: Susan Shelley
It’s time to end the coronavirus emergency in California.
Gov. Gavin Newsom issued his “guidelines” for reopening the state on Thursday. County public health officials will have to prove that they’ve met certain conditions before he will allow the county to move on to the next “stage.”
The conditions look like excuses to keep the emergency going for months or years.
For example, counties will have to show that they’ve had no more than one new COVID-19 ca

I suppose I should be grateful that my local government gave me back this right, but I’m not. Instead, I resent that they took it from me in the first place. I feel like a rebellious teenager because our local elected officials are trying to be my mother.

Standing for taxpayers and direct democracy
The powers of direct democracy — initiative, referendum and recall — have been powerful tools to control slow-moving or corrupt politicians.
These powers are enshrined in the California constitution for reasons that are just as compelling in 2020 as they were in 1911 when Gov. Hiram Johnson, seeking to counterbalance the influence the railroads had over the state Capitol, pushed to give ordinary citizens equal footing with legislative bodies to enact or reject legislative proposals.

How do you coach when you can’t really, you know, coach?
The first thing in football’s new normal, Sean McVay said, is to trust the players. You can have virtual meetings to impart information, and you can make sure the athletes have the proper tools to keep themselves in condition on their own. But as long as the coronavirus pandemic continues, and teams can’t actually take the field as a group, the onus is on the players to follow the plan.
    Yeah, it’s tough on play
