Easter is a time for hope
Easter is the most joyous occasion in Christendom, as Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion on Good Friday (the term “good” coming from an older definition meaning “pious”). Capping a week often filled with fasting and prayer, Sunday services are awash with flowers, processions, feasts and – most important, perhaps – fellowship. It’s typically a lovely time across the country, regardless of one’s religious beliefs.

California’s coronavirus response must be guided by the data
The novel coronavirus has spread in the United States since early March, igniting epidemics in some major cities like New York City, New Orleans and Detroit.  Many of the outbreaks have increased rapidly, peaked, and some have now declined. Despite the worst fears, the virus has not spread broadly in the general population.
As of April 10, there have been about 475,000 cases and 17,000 deaths reported in the country.  In California, there have been about 20,000 cases and 550 deaths, eq

  • The coronavirus crisis and our constitutional rights

The coronavirus crisis and our constitutional rights
Americans always lose some constitutional rights during a crisis.
Such infringements fall into three categories. The most egregious examples generate near-uniform disdain, but usually only once a crisis passes, and with the benefit of hindsight. Examples include President Franklin Roosevelt’s internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, or Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s actions during the Red Scare. With more subtle losses of civil liberties during a crisis, the risk is that rights

Little transparency as hotels become homeless housing
California is attempting to lease 15,000 hotel rooms to house homeless people for three months, and Los Angeles has set its own goal of procuring 15,000 hotel rooms for the same purpose.
“This is the crisis that predated the most current crisis in the state of California,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said on April 4, “We’re doing everything in our power to meet it head on.”

Still, the newspapers are filling up with the inexplicable and aberrant as if America was made up of 50 Floridas. Three weeks into self-quarantining and the crazies are coming out of the woodwork.

Little coronavirus relief for property owners
The second installment of the 2019-2020 property tax bill was due on Friday and we hope the majority of California’s property owners were able to pay it without economic hardship. Unfortunately, for many homeowners and small businesses, it was more than just a hardship. They simply didn’t have the cash, and now they’re considered delinquent.
For this regrettable state of affairs we can thank both state and local officials. Gov. Gavin Newsom had the authority to issue an executi

Did one of your family members need medical attention this week? Did a friend speak to a crisis counselor, or a did a neighbor need help accessing a food pantry? If so, thank a nonprofit worker.
The nonprofit sector does not typically get much attention or respect when it comes to economic strategy and development. New research that our Center put out shows that would be a mistake.
