    Storms sweep across southern U.S., death toll rises to 10

    HOUSTON — Severe storms sweeping across southern portions of the U.S. were blamed Saturday in the deaths of at least 10 people, including two first responders, as high winds, tornadoes and unrelenting rain battered a large area of the region.
    Storm-related fatalities were reported in Texas due to icy weather, in Alabama from a deadly tornado and in Louisiana, where winds were so strong that they lifted a trailer home off its foundation and carried it several hundred feet.

    A nonprofit laboratory that opened last month in Irvine will be helping to incubate breakthroughs in the biomedical industry.
    More precisely, it is incubating the innovators who will be making the breakthroughs – by offering access to costly “wet” lab space and equipment that would be nearly impossible for a startup to buy itself.

    San Clemente man gets prison time for hate crime attack on African American grocery store employee
    A San Clemente man was sentenced Friday to six years in prison for an unprovoked attack on an African American employee at a Laguna Beach grocery store.
    Fernando Ramirez, 23, was found guilty last year of one felony count of battery with serious bodily injury, a misdemeanor charge of violating civil rights by force and a felony hate crime enhancement.
    On June 15, the victim, a 26-year-old man,was working at a Whole Foods Market when Ramirez ran up behind the employee and sucker-punched him.
