    The progressive wing of the California Democratic Party was firmly in control of the Capitol last year and was able to pass some of its top priorities. Unfortunately, we could detect a common theme. The Legislature and governor identified serious problems – too-few high-paying jobs, declining housing affordability and poor-performing schools – and proceeded to make each of them worse.     The Chargers closed out a disappointing 2019 season with a 31-21 defeat to the playoff-bound Kansas City Chiefs Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.     USC quarterback Kedon Slovis will not require surgery on his injured right elbow, the team announced on Twitter on Saturday.
