    Of Freedom Village’s 416 residents, nearly 60 are veterans. Among their ranks are men and women who have served in every branch of the military – all of whom have their own stories to share, even if they might usually keep to themselves.
    A few days before Veterans Day, the Lake Forest retirement community held an event to give its many veteran residents a time to open up and share their experiences serving their country.

    NEW YORK  — Environmentalists are lauding a federal court order that blocks a Trump administration permit for the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, pending an environmental review.
    The pipeline would begin in Alberta and shuttle as much as 830,000 barrels a day of crude through a half dozen states to terminals on the Gulf Coast.

    Marky Meza Jr., who worked at Borderline Bar & Grill, was among those killed during Wednesday’s mass shooting in Thousand Oaks, his family confirmed to a Santa Barbara television station.
    Meza, who was less than two weeks shy of his 21st birthday, was a busboy and food runner, according to KEYT. He grew up in Santa Barbara and Carpinteria.

    LOS ANGELES — Kings captain Anze Kopitar admitted Monday he didn’t know much about new interim coach Willie Desjardins, who was hired after John Stevens was fired Sunday. But goalie Jack Campbell knows all about Desjardins.
    Desjardins was head coach of the Texas Stars of the AHL for two seasons, during which time Campbell was one of his goalies.

    It was 1989, and Sgt. Ron Helus was still in the academy.
    The instructors there, in a dusty corner of Camarillo, would test recruits’ composure by ragging on them, ribbing them, trying to get them to laugh. If they cracked a smile — push-ups. It didn’t end there. With each rep, the jokes would continue.
    For Helus, at the start of what would be a 29-year career, there was only one problem.
    “He was quick to laugh,” said Scott Horton, who was in the academy with Helus.
