USC football mailbag: Did Athletic Director Lynn Swann drive coaching staff changes?
USC enters a new reality. As much as its football program has had ups and downs in the aftermath of the Pete Carroll era and proceeding NCAA probation, hamstrung by the erratic tenures of Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin, it still always seemed to be a ways away from the brink of a tailspin.
Sure, there was the Sun Bowl finish of 2012, but even then, the Trojans stood 6-2 at the end of October and ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press poll. They finished 7-5 in the regular season, 7-4 with Matt B

Southern California distillery offers its first bourbon — for $250 a bottle
Since it opened in October 2016, the folks at Blinking Owl, Orange County’s first distillery, have always had their hearts set on making the Lincoln Continental of American spirits: bourbon.
But it takes two long years of aging in barrel before bourbon can be labeled as such. In the meantime, Blinking Owl has been making its name (and a few bucks) by selling vodka, gin and aquavit, spirits that don’t need aging. The distillery has more than a little successful in that pursuit –

    Dear readers,
Each October I write an anniversary column that reflects some of what I have learned from our readers during this past year. Every so often someone asks me, “Are you still writing the column?” The answer is yes. After 17 years and almost 850 columns, there is more to write because the successful aging story cuts across everything from public policy, to business, entertainment, pensions and testosterone. And fortunately – we all are doing it.
