• California and climate change

Think California should catch at least a bit of a break on the climate-change front because the state’s environmental policies, university research and private industry have been on the cutting edge of combating the peril?
No, you didn’t really think that, because informed people know that both local weather and the climate in general are global in nature, influenced by greater factors than our own state’s greenhouse-gas output.

LOS ANGELES — Doc Rivers isn’t even defensive about it – his team’s defense last year needed work.
The veteran coach ticked off the ways his Clippers struggled to stop opponents last season. They were 30th (and last) in the league defending in first eight seconds, he said, as well as 30th in transition defense and 30th in corner 3-point attempts.
“Thirty is not a good number,” said Rivers, whose team, by the way, ranked a most acceptable eighth in offense.
