    SAN FRANCISCO — An appeals court on Wednesday rejected a former Stanford University swimmer’s bid for a new trial and upheld his sexual assault and attempted rape convictions.
    The three-judge panel of the 6th District Court of Appeal in San Jose ruled Wednesday that there was “substantial evidence” that Brock Turner received a fair trial.

    A man who sent an email warning “this place will burn” is in the custody of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in connection with the investigation into the Holy fire.

    LOS ANGELES — USC outside linebacker Porter Gustin has suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee and is slated to undergo surgery Thursday, two sources with knowledge of the situation told the Southern California News Group.
    Gustin, a senior who is one of the Trojans’ top pass rushers, is expected to be out several weeks and could miss the season opener on Sept. 1 against UNLV, depending on his recovery. The Trojans then travel to Stanford and Texas in the following weeks.
