Remember all who defend liberty this Memorial Day
On Memorial Day, according to the United States Code, the nation’s flag is to be displayed at half-staff until noon, when it is raised to full-staff.
The sentiment, it is said, is meant first to give reverence to the more than 1 million people who have died under arms in service to the country and then to the living who continue in their stead in defense of liberty.
Perhaps for some that notion has been lost, as Memorial Day has become a three-day weekend gateway to summer vacation, barbec

We need a new Church Committee on FBI and DOJ surveillance
Congress, not a team of prosecutors, dug out the truth — U.S. government surveillance programs were used to secretly, and probably illegally, wiretap, bug and harass U.S. citizens.
Two congressional committees documented the surveillance abuses by the NSA and FBI. The committees were chaired by Sen. Frank Church, D-Idaho, and Rep. Otis Pike, D-New York. One wiretap target was Martin Luther King, Jr. J. Edgar Hoover thought King colluded with Communists.

SACRAMENTO — In the winner-takes-all world of electoral politics, it’s always helpful for both sides to have convenient boogeymen. Liberals love to depict the Koch brothers as the scourge of our political system. They are GOP-oriented billionaires who fund free-market causes. Likewise, conservatives often rant about the supposed evils of George Soros, the New York-based billionaire whose Open Society Foundations fund liberal priorities.

Trevor’s Travels: Jensen Alvarado Ranch shows how one of Riverside’s wealthiest families once lived
A year ago, I visited the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. Part of our walking tour of the city took us to royal palaces — several of them, but the one belonging to Queen Margrethe II was slightly different. I looked up to see if she had more chimneys than the others, and, yes, she had more.
I had learned about this Danish chimney thing during a visit closer to home some time ago, at at the Jensen Alvarado Historic Ranch and Museum.

For example, the survey of 1,702 California adults shows 13 percent of renters say real estate costs were their top California concern. Just 7 percent of homeowners felt the same way. One thing homeowners typically possess that renters don’t —
