Breeders’ Cup: Gun Runner goes wire to wire to take Classic
DEL MAR — There’s no debate. The case is closed. Gun Runner is the best older horse in America. The 4-year-old son of Candy Ride capped an exceptional 2017 campaign Saturday with an exclamation mark, rolling to a 2-1/4-length victory in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar that most assuredly will result in the colt being named Horse of the Year in January.Gun Runner took the lead right out of the gate, set fast fractions of 22.50, 46.31 and 1:10.50 for the mile and a

USC’s offense hit with red zone trouble early against Arizona
LOS ANGELES — In the days before facing Arizona, USC’s coaches were asked how they might contend with the Wildcats’ high-scoring offense.
Both Coach Clay Helton and offensive coordinator Tee Martin pointed to their own unit.
Since Arizona, led by a dynamic quarterback and sudden Heisman Trophy candidate in Khalil Tate, could rack up points, the Trojans needed to total their share and finish drives in the end zone. They had to match Tate’s unit, they reasoned.

Derek Grant has been unusually productive for the Ducks this season
SAN JOSE – His first goal in the NHL came after 93 games spread among five teams over five seasons. The next one arrived just over 43 minutes of action later.
And that breakthrough game against Montreal in itself is a feel-good moment for Derek Grant, who’s often tried to stick in the league and is doing so right now for the Ducks. But there’s been more. Much more.
Grant’s first month has seen him make the club out of training camp, play in all 14 games at center from the

Servite water polo upsets Woodbridge in sudden-death overtime
IRVINE >> Servite water polo player Jack Dunbar believes he is “pretty good” at firing shots that blast off a post and into the goal. But he never bounced one in quite like he did Saturday for the upstart Friars.
The junior fired a shot from about 8 meters off the right post and into the cage with 1:30 left in sudden-death overtime to lift Servite past third-seeded and host Woodbridge, 10-9, in the CIF-SS Division 3 quarterfinals.
The shot, from the middle of the pool, ignited

Miller: Arrogate goes out as a fading star in a Classic setting
DEL MAR – It was a two-horse race Saturday, Gun Runner holding off the extended charge of Collected to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The presence of a fading giant, however, made it a three-horse story, Arrogate finishing his career in a dead heat – according to official race photos – for fifth place, as if anyone wants a picture to remember that.
“He’s just losing interest,” trainer Bob Baffert said of the horse not long ago being compared to the sport
  • The GOP establishment no bargain either

The GOP establishment no bargain either
Perhaps nothing has been more ironic than the canonization of respectable, moderate-seeming Republicans. People like Mitt Romney and the Bush family, once castigated as practitioners of unmitigated greed or even Hitlerian fascists, have suddenly become laudable in the mainstream media.
In this environment, even the perhaps rightly named Jeff Flake, whose popularity in his state was a rousing 18 percent, or Tennessee’s Bob Corker, now get praise from Democrats largely because they revile Do
