• Pilot dies when plane crashes at El Monte airport

  A pilot was killed Friday morning when a small plane crashed while taking off from a runway at the San Gabriel Valley Airport in El Monte.
  Only the pilot was on board when the plane went down, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.
  El Monte Police Lt. Ernie Cramer said the crash was reported to the station at 9:35 a.m.

  One of the 16 servicemen killed when a military plane crashed in Mississipi this week was a man from Orange, Marine officials said Friday, July 14 in an announcement identifying all of those who died.
  Capt. Sean E. Elliott, 30, with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 452, was from Orange.
  The crew and passengers consisted of 15 Marines and one Navy Corpsman all who perished on site. Equipment on board included various small arms ammunition and personal weapons for pre-deployment training.

  At least one person died early Friday morning, July 14, on the southbound 405 freeway in Irvine after an SUV crashed into a tree, authorities said.
  The 3:08 a.m. collision happened on the Irvine Center off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol. The car also caught fire after the crash.
  One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The number 3, 4 and 5 lanes on the southbound side were closed shortly after the crash. They re-opened after the scene was cleared at around 7:15 a.m.
