via ocregister.com
By NICOLE WINFIELD and BRIAN ROHAN
CAIRO — Pope Francis came to Egypt on Friday for a historic two-day visit aimed at presenting a united Christian-Muslim front to repudiate violence committed in God’s name.
The Catholic pontiff is holding a series of deeply symbolic meetings in Cairo with Egypt’s religious and political leaders; he is also to participate in an international peace conference organized by Al-Azhar, the world’s primary seat of Sunni Islamic learning.

U.S. economic growth weakened to 0.7 percent in first quarter
via ocregister.com
By MARTIN CRUTSINGER
WASHINGTON — The U.S. economy turned in the weakest performance in three years in the January-March quarter as consumers sharply slowed their spending. The result repeats a pattern that has characterized the recovery: lackluster beginnings to the year.
The Commerce Department says the gross domestic product, the total output of goods and services, grew by just 0.7 percent in the first quarter following a gain of 2.1 percent in the fourth quarter.
The slowdown primarily -

‘A Quiet Passion’ finds poetry in life of Emily Dickinson
via ocregister.com
There is something deeply funny and also beautiful about the idea that it would take a British man in his 70s to make the definitive film about one of America’s greatest female poets. But that’s what Terence Davies has done for Emily Dickinson in “A Quiet Passion,” a fiercely intelligent, handsome and affecting rendering of Dickinson’s extraordinary, ordinary life from her teenage years to her death in 1886.
It’s the kind of breath of fresh air experience that -

Just like Disneyland in California, visitors to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World get into the park via Main Street U.S.A.
It’s the fade in to the rest of the park, which holds the record for most-attended theme park in the world.
It opened October 1, 1971. Roy Disney dedicated the park that day, getting the first phase of Walt Disney World built and open after the death of his brother, Walt Disney, some five years before.
The first phase of the resort included some hotels, a campgrou -
Here’s a guide to the summer movies for 2017
via ocregister.com
At this point in movie marketing history, they’ve almost conditioned the entire world to think that summer films should only be big escapist fantasies and loutish comedies. But like the sentient simians from the Planet of the Apes, some of us staged a rebellion last summer.
The number of disappointing returns from supposedly sure-thing tentpole films between May and Labor Day 2016 might have influenced the slight but perceptible cutback in franchise product over the next four months.

Anti-charter bill would do nothing to help students
via ocregister.com
Dressed up in rhetoric of accountability, local control and transparency, Senate Bill 808 is little more than an attempt by California teachers unions to restrict charter schools.
The bill, introduced by Sen. Tony Mendoza, D-Artesia, would limit opportunities for charter schools to be authorized and reauthorized, make it easier for charter applications to be denied and undercut the due process for charter applicants.
Charter schools are public schools with greater flexibility than traditional pu -
Populism on pause, not in retreat
via ocregister.com
Yesterday’s conventional wisdom: A wave of insurgent populism is sweeping the West, threatening its foundational institutions — the European Union, the Western alliance, even liberal democracy itself.
Today’s conventional wisdom (post-first-round French presidential election): The populist wave has crested, soon to abate.
Chances are that both verdicts are wrong. The anti-establishment sentiment that gave us Brexit, then Donald Trump, then seemed poised to give us Marine Le Pen -
Why the fight for free speech on college campuses is so important
via ocregister.com
As conservative author Ann Coulter’s speaking appearance at the University of California, Berkeley was being canceled this week, MSNBC host Chris Hayes expressed “amazement” that free speech issues on college campuses receive so much media attention.
“If you haven’t been paying attention to right-wing media recently, it’s amazing how much attention current campus controversies have gotten,” Hayes tweeted. “But modern conservatism’s emotional -
Orange County drivers are no winners in Sacramento backroom deal
via ocregister.com
In recent days, Orange County drivers have heard from some people about how everyone will benefit greatly from the transportation finance bill (Senate Bill 1) that the California Legislature approved this month. More money for road repairs and a constitutional “guarantee” to protect new transportation tax dollars. What’s not to like?
Actually, there is plenty to dislike. The bill includes the largest gas tax increase in California’s history — a $5.2 billion annual t -
Putting partisanship aside for the good of Orange County
via ocregister.com
Orange County is a donor county. This means that collectively we send far more in revenue to the state than we receive back. Not surprisingly, this impacts almost every aspect of our lives. It would be difficult to identify a public service that wouldn’t be in a better position to serve the public if we just received back approximately the amount of revenue we send to Sacramento.
Politicians across the political spectrum in Orange County decry the unfairness of our donor status. But there -

No. 7 pick Mike Williams should help Chargers, Philip Rivers
via ocregister.com
ANAHEIM — Mike Williams had just received the most important call of his professional life. But first, he had to call back.
You see, phone reception is less than excellent in Vance, S.C., a half square-mile of fewer than 200 people. And since the Clemson receiver had decided to celebrate in his hometown, surrounded by family and friends, taking a call from the other side of the country was a dicey prospect.
On Thursday evening, the Chargers tried to tell Williams they were taking him No. 7 -

Ask Emily: How to ease financial pain of high-deductible health plans

No matter what happens to Obamacare, one health care trend is fairly certain to continue: A growing number of you will have high-deductible health plans, whether you’re insured through your employer or buy on the private market.
A high-deductible health plan is just what it sounds like: In exchange for a lower premium, you pay more of your own money for medical care until your insurance coverage kicks in.
The Internal Revenue Service defines a high-deductible plan as one with a deductible
