    1 dead in Barrow after officer-involved shooting
    There was a fatal shooting in Barrow this morning. The incident involved a North Slope Borough police officer firing on someone.
    A borough spokesperson told KTUU the shooting was fatal.
    The Alaska Bureau of Investigation will travel to Barrow to investigate the shooting.

    An assessment into the damage from the August 2015 Twin Creeks fire on land owned by the Kodiak Island Borough has determined that many of the area’s trees will likely die.
    The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports that the borough hired Joe Stanley of Washington state-based NorthWind Forest Consultants to inspect the borough’s 800 acres of damaged land near Chiniak.

    An Alaska Native regional corporation says it has acquired a sand and gravel company in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
    Ahtna Inc. says it has purchased AAA Valley Gravel, LLC.
    Besides mining sand and gravel, the company has trucking and asphalt operations.
    Tom Maloney, chief executive officer of Ahtna’s business holding company, says in an announcement the Mat-Su Valley is a prime area for increases in highway spending due to its rapid growth.

    Brent Sass covered the 150-mile distance from Eagle to Dawson in two runs. He said his team was feeling better in Eagle after starting the race with some stomach issues.
    “They were sick before the race, the whole week leading up to the race they had the stomach flu,” Sass said. “Then a couple days before the race they had gotten better.”

    Former Wrangell doctor Greg Salard was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison for receipt and distribution of child pornography.
    Salard, 54, will also have a lifetime of supervised release after prison and a $25,000 fine. He was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Juneau.

    A Bethel judge sentenced 28-year-old Mark Charlie Jr. of Bethel to serve 20 years for the murder of Leann Berlin, a 26-year-old originally from Kasigluk.
    Berlin’s body was found in the BNC apartments and had been there for days after she died, Charlie later admitted to strangling her.
    Charlie was originally charged with first-degree murder, but that charge was dropped as part of a plea deal.

    Frontrunners in the Yukon Quest are running toward the race’s halfway point at Dawson City, Yukon.
    Defending Quest champion Brent Sass continues to lead the race. The Eureka musher was in an out of the Eagle checkpoint first this morning, after 4 hours of mandatory rest.
    He only briefly shared the dog yard with chasers, Allen Moore and Hugh Neff, who arrived 2 hours after Sass.
    Fellow veterans Matt Hall and Ed Hopkins are also in the mix near the front of the race.
